Ive got two female budgies and considering a cockatiel. in your experiences do these two species get along well? also how much extra work/time/effort will be required to care for a cockatiel compared to a budgie? (in other words would I be able to play/train the budgies and cockatiel together or do you find cockatiels need more attention), can they be house together or is this not advised?

Budgies and cockatiel can get along, but it really depends on the birds. I have a cockatiel, a hen budgie and a ringneck dove that live together and have for many years, but they seem to be the exception, not the rule.

Cockatiels are as a rule easier going and easier to tame, though not as parrot like or playful as budgies.

The tiel won't be the problem child, it would usually be the budgies. If yours are calm and tame, then all should be well. Once they are well socialized, if you have a nice size cage, they might be able to live together, but don't count on it. Be ready to keep them separate if they don't like each other.

I have both, I love both, but I would never EVER house them in the same cage. I know some people do and I am not commenting on them, but I am telling you from my own experience of having a budgie lose a toe to a larger bird that I will never house different sizes together. However, mine have done well socializing together outside the cages when they are trained to do so and supervised. I train my birds sometimes individually, sometimes together, it depends. Sometimes one who knows the behavior will demonstrate the others.

The cage should be larger, but the work load is very similar to that of a budgie. I would encourage housing them close to one another, but in cages where they cannot reach each other.

Best of luck! I LOVE cockatiels :)

I would not advise housing them together think of it like siblings the older ones don't want to share their room with a younger one and the younger one will eventually cause a fight that will be blamed on the older sibling. Also most animals don't like being forced to share their territory a neutral place like a play stand or something would be a good place for them to socialize without feeling invaded. Plus if something happens and they start fighting they can either get away from each other or you can break them up easier than if it happened in a cage. Or even worse in a cage while your at work and one gets injured.

I'm also considering a cockatiel, and I read from many sources that they can be housed together with budgies. They just have to be supervised at first. I have a crazy exception - a pair of budgies and a lovebird that I got from one house where they already bonded. I tried to house them separately, but it didn't work (I try again if I see any danger to the budgies). :) Right now they just cannot exist even five minutes without each other. :) So you never know what kind of relationship your birds will have.
I also read that cockatiels might get annoyed by too active budgies…
