Cockatiel Questions

Hey guys i am new and i have a question. My best friend got a cockatiel and after playing around with him a bit i have kinda been obsessed with him. So i am thinking about getting one of my own... but i have to parakeets. I have read that they are fine together and that Cockatiels will eat Parakeet food. The place where i will be getting my Cockatiel at (if i get one) is this place that hand feeds them and raises them and trains them at an early age. But the parakeets are from Petsmart and are not as tame as i wish they were. Will the tame Cockatiel become untame if he is with the parakeets? or will it not have any affect? Also if anyone can give me like some Pos and Cos that would be super helpful!

Thanks so much! :white1::blue2:

Do not cage them together. They most likely will fight. If you want your parakeets tame work with them.

Because the cockatiel is a bigger bird, he can hurt the parakeets (we call them budgies) if they don't get along. If your budgies are not tame, I think they would totally freak out by having a bigger bird "invading" their home. Although I have also read some information that cockatiels and budgies can get along, I would not risk putting them together. Your budgies could have a miserable time huddled in a corner while the cockatiel takes over, or worse, they could end up getting attacked. I looked into this myself when I adopted my weiros/cockatiels and I decided against it.

If you get a weiro, get him his own cage. My budgies are currently indoors and in a cage sitting on top of my weiros' cage. They are more than happy living in the vicinity of each other, just not in the same space.

My budgie is more aggressive than my tiel actually...but they do live together. You cannot plan for that however. I have a weird trio of a tiel, budgie and ringneck dove that are bonded...and it can happen, but unless you have a separate cage and room for one, do not proceed. From what I can tell, I have some odd, outlying pets.

Hi Jinx :) I agree with Colorguarder, You should definitely work with your parakeets first. Just because you think you are getting a bird that is tame does not mean it will stay that way if you have no first hand experience with the birds you already have. Spend much more time with your parakeets and tame them first. Then think hard about getting another bird and do lots of research.

I reckon one of mine would give as good as she got.... I'd be concerned that if she "picked a fight" she'd come off the worst. She might start one, but the weiros could finish it.

As I was told when I asked about getting a friend for my galah, it totally depends on the individuals concerned, and things can also change if hormones kick in.

I just introduced my new tiel to my flock that has two young budgies. They were and still are scared to death of him! :D They are not shy guys at all. I dunno why are they so afraid of a tiel - he is not aggressive and is quiet. They were never afraid of my gcc. So you never know how would your budgies react to a tiel.
