Question Adopted Shelter Tiel, any Tips?

Hey, I'm Kae, I'm a new member on this site!
Owner of 2 lovely loves 3 and 7 years old. I recently adopted a new tiel from the county shelter. Saw him looking miserable + nobody had changed his water and his cage was a mess, yuck! Adopted him right away, I have experience w/ cockatiels so I know how to take care of him. He is very sweet, I'm so lucky I found him vet says he's healthy and I got him a big cage + balanced diet w/ veggies so I think he'll do fine. Only problem is he's tired all the time! He's on this weird sleep schedule and he doesn't really want to interact with me most of the time cuz he's busy sleeping. Is he sick, or what could it be?
Any tips are appreciated!

Re: Adopted Shelter Tiel, any Tips?

Give him some time to adjust. While he is happy, it's stressful on the fids to move around and learn to adjust to new surroundings. My rescued CAG needs to sleep and has lots of naps during the day. Vet said its normal that they sleep and recover from their ordeal of the rescue and adoption.

Good luck! He sounds lovely!

Hi there, Kae, and welcome to the forums.

I couldn't look at your photo as it's directly linked to your gmail account. Here, please have a look at how to post pictures: How to Post Pictures

Do you have any history on your newly adopted tiel? Do you know his age?

You mentioned that the vet said he was fine, does this mean you had an avian vet give him a thorough exam?

Sorry the pic did not come through, I'll see if I can repost it.
Yes, Artie had a vet check and he is perfectly healthy, no known age but he's still young and seems to be a boy. No history, he was in the shelter cuz they found him abandoned and very freaked out. I've given him a lot of time in a quiet room to adjust and he sings to me every morning but he is scared of hands.

Re: Adopted Shelter Tiel, any Tips?

I think the reason that your bird is having a bad sleep schedule is because usually at shelters birds are placed in cages that are in a room with just a minimal amount of sunlight. This usually causes ur bird to be used to that room in which sunlight would reach him/her at a different time and it would take a while to be adjusted to the room that you have him now. Unlike humans, birds have a slower processor that is why we are able to overcome jet lag and other forms of sleep distress faster than any other living creature. I hope this helped

I would like to give this site credit for providing me with the information from its blogs: [ BirdCagesNow.com ] (I buy all my cages from this site because the other sites usually sell toxic or refurbished ones...anyways thats a topic for another time
