I'm looking for any advice on taking a bird out to go do things together. I was thinking on the order of going to the park and bringing my bird in some sort of travel cage so he could see stuff beyond the apartment walls. Maybe I could take him to work with me once in a while too.

Does anyone do that kind of thing?

I take my tiel with me everywhere I go every single time I leave the house (asides from when I go to the gym LOL). I work from home but he's bored at home and LOVES being out and about with me... so along he comes :D He wears an avian flightsuit with a leash and is secured to my pants for his safety.

That's pretty cool!

I got my tiel's flightsuit at: Solid FlightSuits? - Avian Fashions

It was a NIGHTMARE having him wear it in the beginning (he would not stop biting at the suit relentlessly... nonstop)... it took several months. It was so bad I almost gave up... sooo glad I didn't because now he is perfectly fine having it on (rarely bites the suit anymore) and knows when I put it on him that he gets to go on an adventure and starts whistling from happiness =)

I tried getting Pumpkin to wear a flight suit, and he hated it and bit me HARD. I gave up. He goes out with me in a small travel cage now.

My new baby Butternut is going to learn how to wear the flight suit, I am determined lol.

I love it when he wolf whistles and people turn around and give me strange look thinking I'm the one whistling at them as if I were some pervert.. and then they see the bird and go "Oh my gosh! I didn't even notice your bird!" LOL

He is indeed SUPER laid back and quiet as a mouse... I wish he would sing more it is so cute... at home he only sings a little when I encourage him. Noise is no issue with this one ;)

I love it when birds get totally involved in their owners' lives like that. What a rich and wonderful life he has. Lucky birdie. That's also interesting about the flight suit. I, too, gave up on making my birds wear those because they just hated them so much. I don't think I could persist for "months" to make mine finally get used to it. Glad to see a bird that finally accepted it and connected it with an outing. That's great.

I work from home now but I used to take my birds to work with me every Friday. They really loved it and that were great for the office mood.

It took about 4 or 5 months and then my tiel finally stopped biting the heck out of the flightsuit... but I ONLY put the suit on right before we went out on an outing... so he eventually associated the suit with going out on an adventure. I never ever put the suit on him when he was just at home with me.

He still HATES having the suit put on him... but it's so fast putting it on him and then he immediately wolf whistles once the suit is on as if he were thinking "Yes! Let's get going..." LOL

I did have to shorten his wings otherwise it was extremely difficult for me to put the suit on because I was unable to pull his long wings through the small holes of the suit... he is still fully flighted though... meaning he can fly around like a normal bird... but shortening the length of his wings has made putting the suit on MUCH easier! he wears it almost every single day... so had to make putting the suit on as comfortable as possible :)

Many people say "I made their day" when they see him... people aren't used to seeing little bird on leash wearing an orange "straight jacket"... that outfit makes him look "Official" LOL

Wow, that's amazing!

I actually bought a small cage that I plan to use for taking my bird to the vet or to the park. I like to fly model airplanes and I'd like to bring the bird with me. Park his cage on a picnic table so he can enjoy some fresh air and see some new people faces. I didn't want the dark closed-in pet carrier so he could see what's going on around and maybe have some sense of participation. I was also planning on getting him a flight harness and tether so he can get some quality flight time while I go out for a walk around the block. If the hawks are that bold though, I may have to rethink that harness.

This reminds me of the man in my neighborhood who takes his canary for a walk every single morning. Theres also this guy with a pair of cockatoos he takes with him wherever he goes, neither with anything but their bond keeping the cockatoos from flying away. He even puts them on trees and lets them do their thing. They are soooo spoiled.
