I'm happy to announce than I'm now a daddy for a little baby cockatiel! He won't come home until he (or she) is fully weaned, which is estimated to be about the end of May or beginning of June. Hatch date 2/27 =)

I may have the bird dna sexed before naming, but I think for the time being I'll just go with CT. That's the first two letters on the leg band, lol. Still, I think not a bad sounding name and it seems like it should be easy to learn if the bird turns out to be a talker =)

CT at the bottom of the pic...

Congratulations :)! What a little cutie! I'm glad you finally found 'your' perfect tiel. Where did you end up going? You're right, CT isn't a bad name to stay with, even though the letters don't stand for anything lol.

Yes, I'm very excited and the bird seemed to choose me, haha. Well at least of the 3 tiels in the store, CT was the one that showed interest and also was the first one to come see me when we went to look again after doing the paperwork.

I went to Kookaburra Bird Shop in Carrollton. It's about a 35-40 minute drive from home which doesn't seem too bad. I'd been in the store talking to John and Michelle about bird choices twice already and they seemed very nice and helpful so I had a good feeling about buying there. They also have a great selection of perches, toys, food and probably everything a bird owner could need so I also picked up a small "Y" shaped natural wood perch and a small boing. By the time baby bird comes home I should have the cage well decked out with plenty of spare items ready for rotation. Not that I want to spoil the fid or anything... hahah

Many congrats on the most precious baby tiel!! CT looks like a complete sweetheart, and no doubt you'll be visiting him/her every chance you get until you can finally bring him/her home. :)

You have to be over-the-moon right now. :D

Julie, both my Sam and my Niko bands letters mean something. Their initials stand for the breeders' establishments. For Sam it's HPH, Helga's Parrot Hatch, and Niko's letters, FF = Fancy Feathers. :)

The leg band is actually CTX125, which C is for the breeder but I didn't ask the name, TX is Texas and 125 is I guess a serial number from that breeder. I kind of like the leg band number so maybe bird's full name name will be CTX125. I guess a birdie might have a hard time saying "Cee-tee-ex one twenty-five" so we'll let em off easy and just go with CT.

Or maybe the family won't like that and we'll have to give em a "real name"... Like Gilligan! Isn't that right, lil buddy? ;)

They said end of May/first of June, depends on how the weaning goes. That's another thing that impresses me about the Kooks store... they don't let the babies go until they've been on solid food for two weeks without losing weight. I could have actually had a tiel from a breeder for half what I paid or even less, but the breeder was offering birds for the owners to finish weaning and I wasn't about to try that.

I'll be making weekly visits though and will take my decent camera next time. No more cruddy cell phone pictures! It'll be exciting to see how much difference a week makes at this stage :grey:

Well it turns out the name CT wasn't very well liked by the family so we played the name game for a couple days and decided to call the bird Dusty!

Next thing to so is have the DNA sexing done so I can say he or she with some confidence. I guess I'm just not big on ambiguity, lol.

My son and I went to visit our baby bird today and again, Dusty was the one focusing his attention on me while the sibling was looking the other way. That really reinforces my feeling of having made the right choice!

Sorry I can't resist more baby pics. I hope to add progress pics every week or so ;)

What an adorable pic that is with the mouth open! I love the name Dusty for a tiel, it's cute. I'm going to say that's a girl ;), and by the reaction I think you definitely picked the right one.

Ooh, I also paid for a dna test today! I guess in a couple weeks we should know to properly say he or she. Very very worth the $20 to me, haha. Either way though, Dusty still works ;)

Lol, he/she is saying Take me home already!

I think it's more along the lines of "got some food for me???" haha. They had just been fed a few minutes before I arrived at the store, but that hardly slows them down at all. I bet I'll have a fat little bird on my hands if I'm not careful :D

He grew a lot this week!

IMG_2785_zpsax4zmlki.jpg

Looks like I caught him a bit early in the morning 'cause his doo is a mess and he's not focused yet! Hahaha! I guess I got impatient with the camera and never even checked my pics until I got home. Next week I'll see if I can't get him perched properly (he's actually on my right hand pinky finger in the pic) and I'll make sure I have a couple of decent pics before I head home.

He seemed a little timid trying to step him up but he did accept some pets on the head and chattered a little bit while I held him. Seemed pretty cool =)

Aw, I love Dusty pics :). So cute! Are you still going to get DNA sexing from the store, or do it later?

Should have sexing results in another week or two, I paid last week to get it done.

Memorial day weekend will be really something for me!! I'll be flying out of town on Friday and driving back with my sweetheart on Saturday. She had to take care of her mother who had dimentia so we've had a long distance relationship for the last 6 or 7 years. Sadly (and mercifully) her momma passed away this February, so my girl just has to take care of a few things and will be coming back to stay. Just so happens that Dusty is expected to move in at pretty much the exact same time, lol. I'm expecting a hectic week of getting everything cozy and comfy for everyone in our apartment so I went ahead and scheduled the whole week off.

So YEAH! You could say that I'm sort of looking forward to everything happening at the end of May!!
