I just spent the day at the ER with Shortness of breath. I reacted to some unknown environmental factor. Then while being treated I reacted badly to the smell of hand sanitizer. I had to get IV steroids.

The dr thinks I'm mildly irritated all the time due to the dust and when I encounter another irritant my reaction is worse.

I'm in a real pickle if I cant keep them or can only keep one. If the dr says i cant have tbem im strongly tempted to keep one any way. My most bonded bird is Jet but if I can only keep one he is also strongly bonded to Rex and that doesn't seen fair. If I keep him he will miss Rex. If I rehome him he will miss me. If I rehome them together they could be split up anyway.

Truth be told I never intended to get a second tiel let alone a girl. She was a found bird and I couldn't find her owner. I looked and still periodically check lost n found on CL p911 etc. No one is looking for her.

After she was here for awhile and thinking I was OK allergy wise I decided to keep her so I know she had a good forever home. She is not tame at all. She will come over if I have food but she is very skittish. She is also the one that has drawn the most blood.

Jet did once when the babies hatched.

Well long story short I don't want to rehome Jet but I may have to.

It's hard but if it is sending you to the hospital then you obviously need to make some changes. Maybe keeping the birds stuff confined to one room in the house and invest in an air purifier.

When I got rats I realized I was seriously allergic to them. Nothing was helping so I ended up rehoming them.

If I keep one I dont think I should split Jet and Rex but I will miss Jet so much and I think he will miss me. If I keep Jet he will miss Rex. Suggestions are welcome about what to do with the pair because im torn. I got jet then rex. Theyve been together 9 months.

Since she is a baby I have decided to rehome Rose. She is being picked up tomorrow. Her new parront Gilbert is piching her up tomorrow.

He was on my waiting list for the next batch of babies. I have one in the nest. If I keep any it will either be Jet,
or the baby if it makes it. I think its a girl lutino.
The scariest part was needing iv steroids

Well ive spent a miserable night with minor shortness of breath (sob) ,off and on all night and a severe headache. Im getting more convinced that the dr was right.

Technically I was instructed to go back to er but as long as I stay in bed I feel ok. So im going to sleep now.

Better but I hate admitting to myself that the birds are making me sick.
I really need advice about Jet.

This is so hard :( I have other freinds who have had to face this and it is gut wrenching :(

Only you can make the final choice. However my personal plan with a bonded pair would be to do everything in my power to keep the two birds together, whether they could stay with me or not. Sort of the difference between losing a freind and a mate. And I would be very picky about sending them to a home you know and trust.

But before you go that far as to rehome them, there are some things you can do to cut down on the dust
-move them into an outdoor aviary
-make a different room in your house their home
-give a soaking shower and clean the cage daily
-switch for seeds or pellets to sprouts
-add additional air purifiers
-stop letting them breed
I'm sure there are additional things I'll think of later.

As for keeping one, I know it is tough for us bird people to even think about living without birds, but someone who has a LIFE THREATENING allergy like yours may need to rethink what bird she shares her life with. I adore cockatiels but they are powder producing birds. Finding a non powder producing bird to share your life may be the only safe way you can have parrots.

I'm so very sorry you are having to do this. I'm literally crying for you. I hope you are able to find a home that you trust to love them the way they deserve.

Well 4 powder down is definitely 3 too many. Looking back my symptoms have been way worse since the babies fledged. Pied and Rose are supposed to be picked up later this evening.

Some of the methods suggested worked well with 1 bird. I cant have them in a seperate room no room or outdoor aviary I dont own the land.

I am thinking of covering all but the front of the cage with no seeum bug netting. Im also going to move them to furthest corner of my room and hang a curtain to close at night.

Im even toying with the idea of converting my armoire into an indoor aviary.

Contain dust? That way then wear a mask when cleaning cage.

Be careful of anything that limits air circulation, as that can pose a health risk to your birds.

Now that ive calmed down some I can think more clearly. Ive been really scared all week because of continued breathing problems.

I just cant bear to part with Jet and Rex right now. Im going to split my room in two and make one side for the birds. Some sort of indoor aviary. Im going to try to limit out of cage time.

Im going to try to keep them off of my bed. Im going to add another air purifier. Also I think it would help if I didnt let them out of their cages all day every day.

Also I am going to start wearing a mask when I know I might encounter smells that bother me.

Dani do you think they would be ok if I only covered the bottom half of 3 sides of cage with no seeum?

How can I help get them used to spending more time in their cage?
