After looking for MANY MONTHS for a cinnamon tiel I could not find any local to me... so I found one in Tampa which is 3 hour drive from my house in Jupiter... I was supposed to pick up bird 2 weeks ago but had to reschedule because bad storm hit and I don't want to drive on that dangerous Route 60 (2 lane highway) if it is pouring rain so hard you cannot even see out the window (that is just asking for a head on collision!!) and this storm is having prolonged NONSTOP down pours (massive flooding everywhere)... then the breeder went out of town for entire week and I am now scheduled to pick bird up this Wednesday but there is nasty storm named "Colin" hitting Florida.... I texted breeder asking if I can come pick up bird on Thurs or Friday just to be safe and the breeder sent me this nasty/rude text in caps:

I WON'T WAIT ANY LONGER WEATHER OR NOT BEEN WAITING TOW WEEKS FOR YOU TO COME YOU SAID YOU HAVE RELATIVES HERE AND TOLD ME YOUR SISTER CAN PUCK IT UP AND THEN ONE THING AFTER THE OTHER I'LL HOLD THE BIRD FOR you TILL WEDNESDAY IF YOU DON'T COME AND PICK IT UP OR ARRANGE FOR SOMEBODY TO COME AND DO THAT FOR YOU I WILL CONSIDER THE DEAL IS CANCELLED AND SELL THE BIRD I HAVE LOT OF BUYERS AND CANNOT AND WON'T WAIT

I then called breeeder on phone and told them I am happy to pay for the bird in full today... they didn't care... they told me if I don't pick bird up on Wednesday they are selling it to somebody else. I as rather shocked at how rude this seller is. ... I don't even have a sister who lives in Tampa so I have no idea where the breeder got that from! Nor has it been "one thing after the other"... I only had to reschedule ONCE due to bad storm!!!

I am very sad... this cinnamon tiel I already paid to have it DNA tested and everything... I will be very sad if I lose this bird :(

EDIT: There has been a state of emergency issued in Florida due to this storm... even once Colin passes... very heavy downpour. Nothing worse than being on a highway when it is raining so hard you cannot even see out the window... let alone on a 2 lane highway!! :( .... this is will be a 3 hour drive from my home.... 3 hour each way.... I don't know what to do... I am going to lose this bird if I don't drive to pick it up this Wed.

Do you have written communications for everything? If the breeder has a good reputation and you lose the bird do to her being unreasonable then you can do some serious damage. If it was me I would most certainly be sharing everywhere if she doesn't compromise with you on pickup date.

Maybe there is a member you would trust near her that would be willing to pick it up for you?

The seller was so rude it actually made my cry! He texted me 2 weeks ago that the bird finally got weaned... it is the breeder's "fault" that bird has not been picked up yet because he went out of town for entire solid week all last week! Now this storm named "Colin" is hitting florida and it's going to have tons of rain even after it goes out to sea they are saying... I am very worried to drive on highway when it is raining so hard you cannot even see out the window because this storm isn't going to be short sun showers... but rather strong nonstop down pour and it's a very loooong drive. I am doing it all in one day... driving 3 hours there and 3 hours back home.

I don't understand why the breeder is saying it's "one thing after the other"... makes no sense! :( ... because I only had to reschedule ONCE due to storm!!... and now this nasty second storm is hitting entire state of FL... I am going to just have to drive on Wednesday morning. I have no other choice =(

I think the worst is today and tomorrow.. keeping fingers crossed by Wednesday it will be much better.

Only communication I have is text... nothing else on paper... I found this breeder on hoobly. Was super excited to get this bird and now I just feel down.

Weather track shows this Storm rapidly moving to the East, Northeast over the next 24 hours. That would have the the majority out of your area by Tuesday afternoon. There appears to be some chance of rap-around showers Wednesday.

Is what the Breeder stated regarding you have family that could pick-up the Tiel true? If so, you do need to take some of the blame here. There is very little profit in parrots (no much if any in fact), and holding parrots that could have been sold a couple of weeks ago can be stressful. This is even more true when one includes the number of held birds that no one ever shows-up for. Just saying! Live is a two-way street.

The seller could be confusing you with more than one person. I put one of my bearded dragons on craigslist and got about 12 people contacting me at once and they got jumbled together and I would have to go back to confirm everything in emails that I remembered the right info. Still doesn't excuse rudeness since customer service makes or breaks good small time breeders.

My mother does own a townhouse in Tampa but she is only in Tampa intermittently and her employee is in process of moving into that townhouse... both my mother and her employee are not in Tampa and have not been in Tampa for the past 2 weeks (They both live where I do in Jupiter)... so I don't have anyone in Tampa who can pick the bird up unfortunately. I actually planned to sleep at my mom's townhouse last week but then breeder had to go out of town for entire week and I can't stay in Tampa that many days (due to work).

... but I'm relieved to see the storm should be gone by early Wed morning.... so hopefully everything will be fine... and if it is raining so hard I can't see out the window of my car then I will just have to pull over and hope it passes.

I was scheduled to pick bird up this Wed... and all I did was ask if it is possibly ok for me to pick bird up Fri/Sat instead of Wed and the breeder suddenly turned nasty. =(

EDIT: I just realized maybe the breeder thinks I have family or friend who LIVES there... that is not the case. I will clear that up when I pick bird up..... would tell him that now but I'm too scared to bother him.

Hope all works out for you...dont feel sad or down as this is an exciting time for you preparing for your little tiels arrival, most likely the breeder was having a bad day and just ended up taking it out on you...think about your lovely tiel instead, and please God the weather will be okay for you to travel and pick him up on Wednesday and then we want lots of pics as soon as you are home and its settled in :)

I have no idea why he made me start crying... I think I was just shocked and wasn't excepting that type of reaction. People drive everyday in horrid downpour and they are just fine (this storm looks pretty nasty though... but worst of it hits tomorrow thank goodness)... so I will just have to tough it up and drive up there....to pick "Coconut" up :)

I am driving tomorrow 1pm to pick Coconut up rain or shine... I figured out why I started crying... it's not the seller's reaction... I was just so let down I started to think maybe I wouldn't be able to get that tiel afterall or thought maybe the seller would disappear or something. I looked many many months for a cinnamon tiel local to me and could not find! ... so I got sad when I thought once I FINALLY found a MALE cinnamon I wouldn't be able to get it afterall.

..... but it's all good now :)

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Very unfortunate you are not having smooth interactions with the breeder. Are they well respected with good online reviews? Any other way you can determine their reputation? Weather is usually a mitigating circumstance, and your offer to pay in full should telegraph commitment and sincerity.

The comments you shared from the breeder are not encouraging on many levels. I hope your efforts will be rewarded with the exact bird promised without any drama. Drive safely, and please let us know how the journey went!!

Drive safe. The same storm that hit FLA is hitting us today. Will be looking forward to pictures and update.

I sent the storm up your way... my "gift" to you ;)

... the odd part of all this is I have not gotten ANY rain at all. It has not rained here for the past 3 days almost (I'm in Palm Beach/Jupiter)... think the worst of it hit Tampa. If I had not been obsessively monitoring the weather channel I would have not even realized there is a storm.

This breeder was very friendly but then suddenly snapped yesterday... I found this breeder on hoobly I don't know if they have reviews there on breeders? This morning I did send a text to him noting that my mother (not my sister... I don't have any siblings... I have siblings on my dad's side but I never met them before!) has a townhouse in Tampa but she is in Tampa only intermittently... incase he thought I have relatives there who could have picked the bird up sooner.... but after he sent that rude text etc I really thought my chances of getting this bird were dim.... but it's all good now =)

... I never got a pet before without seeing it in person first... so this will be a first time experience.

I wish you good luck! I completely understand your apprehension to driving that far in a storm that severe. Personally, if the storm hasn't passed as expected by tomorrow, I would really examine the situation and consider taking a loss. I know how excited you were about getting this cinnamon male baby. I get that... but if worse came to worse you can find one again, although you had trouble finding this one, they're not rare so you will find one again if need be. You might have to get shipped though. You have to weigh whether or not risking your life to go driving out there is worth it!

Good vibes your way... I hope this baby was the one who was meant to be :).

Ya, there's nothing worse than being stuck on a highway (let alone a 2 lane highway, yikes) if it's raining so hard you cannot see out the window... that is very dangerous no doubt.
Thankfully this storm has crossed the entire state and is now far out at sea (it was a fast moving storm for sure!)... it actually has not even rained here yet... it's crazy! It sprinkled for literally 5 minutes and that's it (other parts of FL got is real bad... seems it spared Palm Beach area where I live... I'm sure it will rain eventually from this storm)... I can deal with short sun showers... it's when it pours down hard relentlessly nonstop is the problem then I would not be able to drive on a highway it's not worth the risk... but that's not the case anymore... or I don't think it is.... so it should be fine :)

When do you expect to be at the breeder's? Just think once you get Coconut, you are over the big hurdle with the breeder and you can take your time after you have your new baby. In the breeder's defense, he/she may have thought you were dragging your feet and was loosing a potential sale from another interested party. Hang in their and keep us posted!
