Male or female? What do you like?

Do you like Males or Females best when it comes to Tiels and why?

I am thinking of getting cockatiel. I had the most amazing Tiel. She was so sweet. I gave it to my mom and took our Senegal kiwi. kiwi hated my mom and was going to be given away. I knew Kiwi and she loved me so I kept her. I moved cross country with her. I could not take 2 birds cross country so My mom kept the sweet Tiel her name was Tilly.

Tilly developed a screaming problem. She would constantly call out to my mom if she could not be near her. The screaming was a problem that my mom created . When I had Tilly I never had screaming problems. So my mom kept Tilly on her shoulder all the time. To the point where she would almost forget the bird was sitting on her. So one day my mom went to shake a rug out. She opened the door and shook the rug. OFF Tilly went up and up and up. My mom never found her.

I have never fully forgiven my mom for that. I have gotten over it but a part of me is still very mad that it happened.

Here is Tilly she was very young. Not sure the sex I always thought she was female but not sure she had he first big molt. She was from a pet store.

Here is the bird I miss so much.

Very sorry that happened to your tiel... I wouldn't have handled that well... I know mistakes happen.. I do STUPID things all the time... but still... well you know...

I have always very much loved male tiels... I've had both female and male... I just love how males bob their heads, sing etc... I know every bird is unique but I just love how male tiels are in general... I am able to communicate with my male tiel vocally back and forth... we make chuckling sounds and he copies the sounds I make.... and I don't have to worry about egg laying/binding.

... so I am biased towards male tiels

BB is my very first 'tiel and he/she hasn't had a first molt yet so I have no clue of his/her sex

BB is just about 17 weeks old now and have had him for almost three weeks and I could NOT be happier!

He is an accomplished whistler already. Readily steps up,loves head skritches,he twittles and chirps and starting to "play" with thingsand will go to strangers with no problems.

When I was a kid, I lost Wally,a keet, in the exact manner you lost your 'tiel

He was on my moms shoulder and mom was going out and she had no idea he was on her shoulder.As soon as she opened the door ZOOM! off he went

The neighbors heard him in their trees for a few days but I couldnot find him..I feel your pain.

Thanks guys. I am thinking Male too. Males of many types of animals tend to be more laidback and outgoing. They go with the flow more than us females that like more control. I think female are more loyal in general.

I know females in the bird world (Not us humman) tend to be on the quite side compared to males. Thats one reason I might want a female. There is a 8 week old baby at a breeders that I am thinking of getting. The breed thinks it's a male because he is already acting like a male. I might go get him.

I've raised tiels for many years and I have to say the females. The males are wonderful and cute, they do their whistle and all. But I enjoy the females more, to me they're sweeter. The only downfall is the egg laying part.

My 4 yr old male tiel is very cuddly... he will bite you hard though... but the new baby male tiel I just got is INSANELY sweet... super duper cuddly... incredibly gentle he refuses to bite me! He just tickles with his beak even when I aggravate him when trying to pick him up to move him into cage... time will telll how he turns out as he grows though. I think if you are lucky enough to get a cuddly male that is awesome

You can look through my old post of the very last tiel I've raised. I no longer raise them anymore due to health reasons. It have photos of day by day growth.

Are you are referring to raising orphan birds?

No, it's when I used to raise baby tiels. I hand feed the babies myself.

Your Tilly looked like such a sweet girl. I'm so sorry about what happened to her. These things we never forget. I wish you good luck in finding a great little companion tiel, whether male or female.

Did they mostly not make it before they were weaned? I'm guessing once they have been weaned they are in more stable shape etc.

They all make it just fine. I enjoy hand feeding them myself although at that time I had issues with a pair, they weren't good parents so I yank their chicks 100% of the time.

Ok so I am pretty sure I am going to get a cockatiel like 98% sure. I want to go to a breeder. I found one that did Co parenting she handled the birds but did not hand feed. A part of me is scared to get a tiel too. When I was really little my mom had one and it was a nasty bird. I did not trust that bird and it was a feather picker. I shared my bed room with him. He would talk to me I would put my hand near him and he always tried to bite me. This was back in the 80s.

What should I look for in a breeder? How do you pick the right bird? My last one Tilly picked me. Tilly hopped on my hand and did not want to get off. I knew I had to have her. It was a pet store bird I have no idea if she was hand raised. I want that magic again.

This is the little one I might get but I am still not sure.... Breeder says it's her favorite and goes on the hand and let's you touch hI'm. I have not met him yet.

Do you think they have to be hand raised to be the best pets? He is only about 8 weeks old.

Just let the bird pick you. Unless the one you wanted picks you anyways. The picture you posted from the breeder would be one I would not buy from. The bottom of that cage is filthy, I would be scared for the health of the chicks. Are they raising them outside? Unless they regularly keeping them vet checked and keeping them mite free, I would be weary.

Just let the bird pick you. Unless the one you wanted picks you anyways. The picture you posted from the breeder would be one I would not buy from. Thanks for that. The first photos I saw of this bird it was in the home. Looks like she moves them out once they get bigger. Lots of people in Sacramento CA keep birds outside. The bird looks healthy. What does not kill you makes you stronger right.... maybe not for birds.

I found a bird store an hour away from me. I think I will go check it out. It's said to be a really good store with great birds. I will make a little trip in a few days. I really want a bird to pick me like my last tiel did.

Like I have mentioned earlier, I never had a 'teil, but after reading posts and seeing pictures of the sweeties on this awesome forum,I really wanted one

more as a "friend" for Amy.
I googled breeders in CT and found an awesome place about an hour away.
After visiting the place and looking at all the birds and chatting with the owners, I found out they have been in business 38 years,every bird,except the 'keets,are born and hand fed/ raised there. Greys,'Too's,Macs,'Teils,Electus,Conures..ALOT of birds they have!

He had four grey 'teils that were ready for homes that day..the others,cinnimons and the others would be ready in a week.
Todd showed me all four greys and all of 'em were friendly,readily steeping up,and I could just scoop 'em up in my hands lol.

I guess we choosed each other

. I never thought of being owned by one,but this little guy is remarkable and Amy :green:

loves him just as much as I do. :grey:

What a cute story. Yeah I really want to be able to let my bird pick me too. This breeder only have one baby left so I could not pick the right one I would just get what I get. Glad to here you and your birdie friend are happy with the new baby. How fun.
