Two Cockatiels: Rascal (Geraldine) and his baby brother named Coconut!
My almost 4 yr old tiel Rascal is a bit of a jerk. He bites REALLY super hard when he bites (it really upsets me!)... he has always been like this and it is not because I don't spend time with him (he is always on me.. a velcro bird... and I work from home and spend all day with him). My new baby tiel Coconut is super lovable and does not bite at all... he only tickles with his beak... refuses to bite me even if he gets upset.

At first Coconut wanted to preen and say hello to Rascal and be friends with him.. but Rascal was nasty to Coconut.

.. so now Coconut hisses at Rascal if he comes too close because he now associates Rascal as being MEAN!!! Rascal keeps his distance when Coconut hisses at him.

One day I plan to get a GCC and am worried Rascal is TEACHING Coconut to fear other birds!!

I REGRET not getting a baby tiel and a baby GCC at same time... it seems that is best way to better ensure chances they will get along without any injuries... so I wish I could get a baby GCC now while Coconut is still a baby but I can't handle 3 birds at this time in my life. If Rascal was like this towards a GCC I can imagine he would end up a dead bird??? I wish Rascal was more like Coconut!

Rascal was an "only bird" now has competiton. I had Smokey my grey for over a year before I got Amy,and Amy wanted to be friends right off but Smokey wanted NO PART of it. Smokey would sneak up on Amy,then pull her tail feathers to make Amy yell then run away laughing! :(
They even went beak to beak once and Smokey bit Amys tongue, requiring 5 stitches
That was the last time I let them get near each other. Smokey was just super jealous. Amy and BB are best friends, even with the size difference. It just depends on the birdies personality.

I don't think Rascal is jealous at all though... but he is definitely not used to other birds. They do like to eat together though and have their faces not even one inch apart from each other as they eat. Their faces practically touch each other when eating :)

..... hopefully maybe as time goes on they will start liking each other better... but I have my doubts.

Guess time will tell... but if I had to do it over again I would have gotten baby tiel and baby GCC at same time. Right now I love Coconut so much I don't even know if I will end up getting a GCC in the distant future or not :)

Yes you probably got some jealousy issues, Rascal has been top of the heap and a velcro bird and now has some competition for your affections. I am sure you can work on this, perhaps just needs some thinking about? One of these two will also be the dominant and that doesn't sound sorted yet! It may not necessarily be Rascal!

LOL... Coconut may indeed be the under dog... but he may very well become the boss :) You should see how Rascal runs away at lightning speed the second Coconut hisses at him. He sure ain't sticking around. Coconut was super nice to Rascal at first but quickly realized Rascal is mean!! Coconut NEVER hisses at me lol. Rascal has damaged his relationship with his brother!!

Will be interesting to see how this goes... I think when Coconut starts singing they will become singing buddies if nothing else. When Rascal is around other birds singing he loves singing with them. I would love to hear more singing lol because Rascal is quiet as a mouse all day long!.. not that it's a bad thing of course.

Coconut keeps calmly walking right up to Rascal... stands next to him for several long seconds with a blank look on his face and then decides to bend down and start chewing on Rascal's foot... not viciously of course he is just trying to play with his toenails. This of course leads to a short fight between the two. He also like trying to preen and chew on Rascal's tail when he is asleep.

I guess Coconut will eventually learn that is NOT how to get on his brothers good side :p

Don't think so - think he's stepping up! Watch them for the time being to stop any injuries! Please be careful!

Usually they are ok around each other but sometimes, not often at all, they will get into a beak fight. I don't know if they are are mostly trying to intimidate each other or they are really trying to bite hard. Thank goodness it is an argument between 2 tiels and not GCC and a tiel. .. then I would be super worried for the tiel.

.... I just don't want to see any eye injuries, yikes. They are cool most of the time and I'm sure they will get used to each more as times passes... =)

it is so funny though because when Rascal is singing in a happy mood they can be so close to each other they are touching... and then they are cool with each other... for some reason it is as if Coconut can tell Rascal is happy singing his heart out in a singing trance.

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
That they engage in the flock-behavior of eating is a good sign. Coconut is still new and Rascal is faced with a myriad of emotions. Please give them time and patience before drawing any conclusion.

You have plenty of time to play peacemaker and hopefully will succeed. Sometimes they just don't ever bond, but IMHO you are a long way from separation!

They did just get introduced about 3 days ago... so I know I have to give it some time. I'm excited to see how it unfolds. They look like best friends in the below photo which is a little "misleading" lol... it is very cute when they eat together though :D

I just want to give you a big cheer for taking their care so seriously, and coming here to learn and experiment.

Thanks for your kind words. This little guy (Coconut) is a handful lol... he is very attracted my new laptop and already tried to bite through the screen! My other tiel Rascal NEVER touches my laptop he is not interested in it... but Coconut is another story. I can't get any work done he is like a persistent vulture and my laptop is his prey! Trying to give him other toys to destroy instead doesn't work. Going to have to raise my laptop out of his reach so I can finally get some work done in this padded room with this cute cuddly little devil ;)

It is really sad he has TONS of pent up energy because he can't exercise normally... when Rascal is too hyper I just have him fly for a couple minutes and then he's very calm and immediately wants a nap. Coconut flaps his wings but that's not enough, poor thing.

Awwwwwww, poor little guy. He'll get there!

Have you seen my guy's little pink "cockatiel feet"? So different from most parrots' feet. I think it's one of the cutest things about him! See? I tease him that he's half macaw and half cockatiel.

Cute bird. I am soooo envious you have a conure. I hope to maybe own GCC one day :) Right now I have my hands full with my new baby riel Coconut, I LOVE Coconut. Rascal too of course... Rascal is super laid back ;)

Rascal had extremely pale white feet when he was a baby and it had blacks spots all over them... but his feet turned a solid dark grey a time went on =)

I WISH I had as much menalin as he does! I'm a freakin albino! =(

OMG... quick update... for the first time ever my 4 yr old tiel Rascal wants to be friends with my new baby tiel Coconut! Rascal keeps slowly walking up to Coconut and is trying to be NICE to Coconut!! He tried to slowly preen Coconut but since he is on Coconut's bad side Coconut is not being as receptive as he was before Rascal was nasty to him.... so now Rascal must earn Coconut's trust back for sure.

... but they are making huge progress today... they both are touching beaks checking each other out and not fighting! :D They are even playing together!! When Coconut feels uneasy he growls and scares Rascal away and then Rascal runs lol

It is so insanely cute I could cry lol... I never seen them like this until today. I'm sure it will keep improving... I am sooo happy I got a second tiel :D

... but Coconut does indeed seems to be the Boss.... Rascal better step up his game.. he's letting a 3 month old baby take charge. How embarrassing :p

See, already you're seeing things evolve. They will keep on evolving too. Right now you know Coconut's baby personality. You'll see more traits open up as he becomes mature, then years after that, you'll keep seeing yet other facets of his personality. Coconut is so pretty. I really love cinnamon color.

I HOPE Coconut will always bite feather light.. meaning he just tickles my finger NEVER bites me even if he's upset he will just do a whiny growl and tickle my hands with his beak lol
Rascal would always bite really hard even as a baby. I have never had such a sweet gentle bird as Coconut. It's very refreshing:) Is this common? As none of my tiel's ever been this gentle!

Rascal hasn't changed since he was a baby... he is still super clingy and bites like a jerk lol He is also a mute!!! He's always been super quiet... I love how much more vocal Coconut is ;) Coconut is equally as much of a velcro bird though lol I don't mind it... soooo cute he ALWAYS wants to be on my shoulder hehe.

Really happy to see Rascal and Coconut making progress. Don't be surprised if there are setbacks. But the trend is good!!

.

They're all different, but at some point you might have to work with him on bite pressure training as soon as (if) you see this behavior emerging. That goes for any bird, especially good to catch it when the behavior first starts appearing. He might change as he gets more mature, but he might not.
