Amy a Blue Front 'Zon
Jonesy a Goffins 'Too who had to be rehomed :-(

And a Normal Grey Cockatiel named BB who came home with me on 5/20/2016.
I was watching a little idiot box when I got home early this morning and all was quiet. Amy and BB just sleep and don't make any commotion, like Bonesy did.
All of a sudden lil BB starts waving his arms all about and I hear him crash to hs basement..still thrashing all about. The only light was from the tv so I grabbed the little flash light off the coffee table and rushed over to him.
I opened his front door and gently picked him up. For about one minute,he snuggled under my chin as I held him, letting me REALLY pet him all over.
he didn't say a word. Then he nibbled at my fingers, wanting to sit on my shoulder.
He sat there,on my shoulder, while I skritched his little noggin, while we watched a little law and order.
He let out a couple /twittles and got back on my finger and I put him back to bed.

I remember seeing a thread about nightmares or something of that sort.
This was the first time he did this. Kinda scared me :(
Please excuse any weird typing,as he is walking about on my key board as I type this :p

Yes you probably startled him, sometimes they do not register the noises you are generating straight away possibly because in a deeper sleep and then suddenly "Oh dear, what's that?"

Perhaps if you just talk to them as you come into the room, so he will register your voice above other noises to say it's only me, I'm home etc etc etc. You may not get the fright - may get a request for cuddles after a bit but hopefully no frights.

I do/did that. And they both peeped to show me that they knew it was me,and I had been in the living room for close to 45 minutes.

Its also know as Night Flights and seems to be more common with Tiels. As stated above, can and could have been set-off by most anything.

See this with old Amazons that have been ill and the meds have them sleeping deeper than normal. They wake and freak-out for any number of reasons. From noise to light to their sleeping position was different then their normal one.

Regardless, it is freaky for everyone!

Two Cockatiels: Rascal (Geraldine) and his baby brother named Coconut!
Night frights can be extremely dangerous and lethal. I made mistake of allowing some woman in my neighborhood to watch my tiel at her house for a few days while I went out of town... my tiel had night fright episode at her house and this woman allowed him to thrash and thrash around for who knows how long.

The severe bruising caused ALL of his flight feathers to fall out... this horrid person didn't even bother to notify me my tiel was seriously injured and actually tried to cover it up!... dried blood was everywhere and half his wings were missing when I picked him up he looked like completely different bird! I immediately rushed him to vet when I returned from out of town... but this delay caused severe infection which lead to kidney failure... his liver was sought also. He was at the vet clinic for over 3 weeks! He almost died... he should not even be alive right now. This person should have notified me and rushed him to the vet rather than trying to hide it!! This woman has 2 birds she knew what she was doing

No matter how many lights I had on, TV on or off, cage covered, partially covered etc... nothing worked he continued having night frights. He now sleeps in a fish tank next to my bed every night for his safety and my peace of mind. I am super relieved I finally found a solution which works and now bed time is no longer stressful :)

Be very careful who you allow to watch your pets! I had to call police and animal protection on this person. I no longer trust anyone other than boarding him at vet in an incubator if I have to leave town.

Wow Tropical, what a horrible experience!

I often notice Dusty is a little clumsy thing when we're playing and wouldn't be surprised if some time he may just accidentally step off his perch at night. Hopefully BB just took a little misstep and is none the worse for it.

1) I'm glad everything is ok with the little fella

2) you did NOT just saddle that poor little fella with that cursed "beebs" moniker.

JIM , I am glad the little squirt is ok. I have read that cockatiels are prone to Night Frights. Hopefully this was a one-time event.
