Male cockatiel named Hank 🐦 he is my baby.
Hello everyone, I am new to the forums I have a male cockatiel named Hank, me & my husband love him to death he is our only child. I notice yesterday that he has been plucking some feathers under his wing and around his wing on top, I noticed it after his bath time. I have contacted the vet and he has an appt this Saturday coming up. Here are some pictures of his feather. Not sure why he is doing this? We work normal hours everyday, he gets lots of time out of his cage, lots of attention, clean cage with lots of toys to play with all day. When we get home he either sits on me or my husband he eats with us, he goes to sleep with us in his own cage. Nothing has changed at all with him or his diet. He is on tropimix. Now he doesn't eat a lot of veggies I cook for him and he doesn't like any of it and never has. He would rather eat French fries and lots of bread lol. Anyways when he is picking at his feathers he makes this noise while he plucks. He is always picking at his feathers.... Please help? I'm hoping to get answers from the vet sathrday, this is my baby & I love him so much....

Thanks Brittany & Hank 🐦

I have a female cockatiel Lutino that has been plucking her feathers for more than a year.
The short answers I have for you may not help as my bird still plucks her feathers.

#1 Vet visit. Have him checked out to make sure it's not due to a medical/issue.

#2 In my opinion most feather plucking is psychological And you may never find a reason or get it to stop.

MY little Pinky the feather plucker is picking the feathers off her back, under her wings. every time she pulls a feather she makes a squeak so I know it's painfull. She is very shy and I think lonely even though she has 2 other cockatiels in the cage with her.

I wish you luck and will watch this thread in the hope someone has a real solution.

Have the vet specifically check for mites. With respect, my belief and experience is that when you are fortunate enough to catch the plucking WHEN IT STARTS (instead of adopting a plucker) often the causes (usually more than one thing)can be identified and rectified and it need not become a life long struggle.
