Hello,

I have a hand raised and very clingy tiel coming on 2 years old, ( Prior to her i have always had males ) Shes pretty much out of her cage 24/7 and recently took a liking to an old set of draws i have in my room, She would sit with me most the night than climb up into the draw and put some of her toys in there, The past couple of days shes grown defensive of the area ( not vicious but she doesn't like me near it )

This morning she was going crazy near the drawers which was odd so i took a look inside and she has laid an egg. This is the first time i have been faced with this situation so im not sure what i should do.

From reading around the best way to approach this is leave them be for 11 days to 3 weeks I dont want to take the eggs and make her depressed/Aggressive, Some threads suggested take the egg and replace it with fake eggs ( White marbles ) after she lays a few, Is this the best approach? After 21 days when the egg cycle ends remove them/her from the draw and lock it up for good? Any advice is welcome!

Thanks all

This is my general recommendation when dealing with hormonal egg laying hens.

  • Remove Eggs
    • Rearrange the cage
    • Move the cage to a new location
    • Use a cage grate
    • Get a new cage/Use a different cage
    • 12-14 hours of complete darkness
    • Decrease calcium and protein within the diet (if she is on a high calcium & protein diet prior to laying eggs)
    • Remove anything that could be taken as a nest
    • Remove anything that could be used as nesting material
    • Don't allow her in any dark place or enclosed area
    • IMPORTANT: save the eggs in the fridge
    • If she lays more than 3-4 eggs, put them back in the cage

  • Leave the Eggs
    • Leave the eggs alone in the cage
    • [Optional] Replace with fake eggs (prevent eggs from breaking)
    • Increase calcium
    • Let hen sit on eggs for 3-4 weeks or until she gets bored of them
    • Once done sitting, toss

If you remove the eggs, you must also remove the triggers to egg-laying. If you don't, your bird will just lay more eggs.

If you decide to leave the eggs, then once the hen is done sitting, you need to remove the triggers to egg laying so that she wont lay more eggs.

Thanks for the response. Im actually going to try the Remove egg stratergy. i have removed access from the area she laid and placed the eggs in the fridge. i will monitor her general attitude and check for anymore eggs in her cage over the next few days if she continues to lay il place the eggs back and let her sit for the period she would naturally.

I picked up some mineral and calcium mix for her water today too which il give her over the next few days just to restore used calcium with laying initially. Thanks for the response.
