So this is my 6th time volunteering at my local bird shelter, I had a lot of fun. They had a lot of different birds, like Macaws, African Grays, Sun Conures, and my favorite a Cockatoo! I fed the birds, played with them and they repaid me buy letting me scratch them, hold them and more

If you guys want pics/more info i'll send :D

How wonderful to hear! I am sure the shelter staff enjoys an extra hand and that most importantly, the birds appreciate an extra human around to help them out. If I'm remembering correctly, you're a bit younger and want a big bird. Continuing to volunteer will gain you invaluable hands on experience and knowledge about large parrots for when you someday bring home one of your own! And who knows, the 'perfect' parrot for you may show up in the shelter and choose you:) Keep up the great work and if you have them, pics of your volunteering please!

P.S. Remember when it's time to apply for colleges, volunteering with animals and sticking with it long term looks excellent on a college application, as it will on a future job application. Win win for everyone.

You do remember correctly, thanks for the advice!

I admire you tremendously.
I don't have the courage or gumption to volunteer... I want to take them all home, and it makes me so squeamish if one gets injured or such.
Good for you!
Thank you.

Those are images of me volunteering at TC Feathers Aviary in Virginia. I was trying to be more comfortable with bigger birds. I feel like I have defiantly improved. Im not scared not of macaw beaks as much, and I can hold their beaks easily. The ruby wing (red one) macaw. Enjoy me(the ugly one) holding the adorable birds)

Dj feathers aviary, I'm pretty familiar with them. I understand them to be not a rescue but a breeding operation. I do sometimes wonder about the condition of a couple of their animals. those [umbrella?] cockatoos on the left wall are crammed into a tiny cage meant for maybe a single Amazon (I should not be taller than a cage intended to house two larger cockatoos), and the self mutilation on a couple of them, plus the couple of bird with messed up beaks. But I try not to judge since I know zero abou these birds history. For all I know they came to this place like that and what a poor life elsewhere and came to the aviary for rehoming. I really do wish they would give the toos a larger cage though.

That said I know The owners hearts are true, they are very kind and generous with their time and knowledge, and I board my bird there when need be. So I do in fact trust them with my boy. I'll never forget the story the guy told me (I've dealt more with Tammy, so I know her, not her husband) about how they time their clutches so that they won't have babies ready around Christmas time to avoid birds being given as Christmas gifts. Mad respect there.

Keep it up!!

The more you work with them, certainly the more comfortable you'll become! Hands on experience like what your getting is something you will greatly appreciate when you someday get a bird of your own. And it's great for the shelter birds too. Every time they are handled by someone or have a positive interaction, that improves their trust, confidence and sociability which will help them find new homes:)

I see you got to hold a B&G. How did you feel handling birds of that size? How do you feel about their jungle calls after being around one in person:p?

Yes, DJ Feathers is a store, not a rescue, but I'm so happy you followed through with volunteering to increase your experience and knowledge of birds!! I sure wish more people would do this before getting a parrot. I commend you for doing so - great job!!!

The first time was... rather interesting. I never knew a bird could be that loud. But now I mostly hold the macaws, and cockatoos. Mostly cockatoos. They are quite heavy and leave me with marks, but i've been desensitized so it doesnt matter to me anymore

Yeah, the cage is mainly for sleeping as they're out mostly 24/7.
