Broken blood feather

So jazz broke a blood feather and I'm not sure what I should do. It looks as if the feather stem broke off leaving a bit left in her wing. I added cornstarch to stop the bleeding but will I need to take her to the vet to have the rest of the feather removed? Will it get pushed out when a new feather starts growing? Should I be worried it'll start bleeding again?

May be wise to have your bird examined by a avian veterinarian, and have the broken blood feather removed to prevent re-injury and another bleed. If a broken blood feather is removed, a new one will start to grow. Have you any idea how it got broken ie do you need to take any steps to prevent it happening again?

well, she complains about her right wing (right side from birds perspective) a lot, her feathers don't look very well. She had a feather most recently split down the middle and was hanging and it bothered her till I clipped the split part. When she preens her right side under her wing she sqwuaks sometimes as if she hit a sore spot. I've attached a photo, she wasn't very happy with me trying to get a picture but you can see the feathers look ragged. She otherwise seems in healthy condition I feel maybe she over preens that area?

she may be starting a molt maybe this is why her feathers are in such disarray?

to answer your question, when the feather broke she had taken a dive from her high perch to come see me. She cannot fly even though most of her flight feathers came back in. When she tries to fly she contorts her body to one side it looks awkward and just kinda lands roughly then waddles over to me. This time she made a heck of a noise when I picked her up and I saw a feather hanging down barely hanging on. it was broke, with some real gooey bloody stuff on the end. I tried to get the whole feather out but I was not able to. I don't believe it was broken before she came down to see me, so she must have somehow damaged it when she tried to fly.

I'm afraid after closely looking at her wing feathers that something is wrong. eek. Boomer goes in for a checkup on Monday so I think I'll take Jazz too.

oh and if you look directly under where my finger is (I wasn't pointing I was trying to hold her gently) there's another blood feather that looks broke, its purple but has no feathers? see it?

I'm watching to see how this turns out. I've read that if a broken blood feather won't stop bleeding, it has to be pulled out and pressure applied until bleeding stops. But since the already stopped...I bet the suggestion to have a vet remove the feather stump is good. Then another will regrow, and if there's any problem you're already at the vet. The vet could maybe say what's going on. Molting or some other issue. If Jazz won't stop picking and is making the feathers bleed ... I wonder what people would suggest about a temporary collar or body sock until you can get to the vet...

I will update after their appointments! She seems to be getting along fine as it is, no bleeding from it since. I haven't washed off the corn starch I'm afraid it might start up with the bleeding again... ��

Well, vet says she looks fine. Gave some metacam to keep it from being sore. The vet said they didn't want to pluck the rest and when it's ready to be replaced it'll push it out on its own.

Very painful. Good on the corn starch. So many things can cause blood feather pain from hitting it when their preening to against their toys and flapping their wings. Especially happens during molting. Glad that she's doing fine now.
