As some of you may know I lost one of beloved cockatiels to liver and kidney failure this spring and since the loss of his mate, I knew my male, Boo, would need another companion or two. I am a firm believer that these smaller birds are happier and healthier with companions to hear and interact with, and so after doing a lot of searching, I found a reputable breeder and put my deposit down on these two baby cockatiels.

Say hello to Ash and Ember! Here are pictures of them growing...

Ash is a male whiteface pearl pied, born March 23, 2018 (a day before my birthday!). Ember is a male pastelface pearl born March 30, 2018.

Although I was hoping for at least one female when I placed my deposit down, they did end up being both boys but I will love them nonetheless. Our house will be busy now with 3 boy cockatiels!

The breeder is keeping me updated as they wean and grow. They are being abundance weaned (allowing the bird to decide when its done eating formula) and so I will not be getting them likely until the middle of July. I really appreciate a breeder who lets the bird choose when its ready to grow up!

I can't wait for them to come home, despite them both being males I think Boo will LOVE having new companions. And of course when they come home I will have to have a proper photo shoot with these guys! :)

Amy a Blue Front 'Zon
Jonesy a Goffins 'Too who had to be rehomed :-(

And a Normal Grey Cockatiel named BB who came home with me on 5/20/2016.
Awesome! I just love the picture of Ember with his beaky wide open looking straight at he camera :) He is either saying "FEED ME!" or "Let me taste you!"
Either way...they both are sweet hearts. How old will they be when the come home with you? I hope Boo excepts them as his new family :35:

The breeder tells me that Ash is self-weaning quickly and will be ready likely ready before July, but Ember is weaning slower. She has a minimum 3 months that they stay and wean with her but she has said some take as long as 5 months to wean. She is guessing mid-July they'll be ready, so they will be 3 1/2 - 4 months old when I get them.

I wanted to update anyone that may be following me on my journey of getting these two babies, while these two were meant to come home in July, I did more thinking and decided that I still really, really wanted a female cockatiel. So at this time I will only be getting Ember from this breeder and not the whiteface pearl pied male, who was to be named Ash, but as I have always wanted a pastelface, Ember is still going to be coming home to me in July. I normally don't back out of a commitment such as this but as I have not yet met either bird, (not many breeders here in Iowa) and the breeder was very understanding and allowed me to place the other half of my deposit on Ember, I will only be bringing him home not the two.

I am now in contact with another breeder a lot closer to where I live who is expecting cockatiel babies to hatch any day and will hopefully be getting a weaned female cockatiel around the fall, and I may end up naming her Ash. She'll likely be a pearl of some kind, as I LOVE the pearls.

Anyway, jst thought I'd let you all know! When they come home, each will be getting a huge photo shoot so don't worry, I will be posting many pictures!

They are all oh-so precious and the last photo is just oozing it! Wanting to chomp, food or roar?? The heart wants what the heart wants sometimes. Ash and others will find equally loving homes.

Can't wait for more pics!

All are rescues- had to leave their previous homes for 'reasons', are still in contact with them :)
Wow, they are very handsome birds!

I have no personal experience with cockatiels- so excuse me if this is a dumb question- but how do you know if they are male birds?
Did you / the breeder DNA-test them or can you tell by just looking at them?

In this particular case, the breeder sent out DNA samples and got them tested that way. Sometimes, based on what the colors of the parents are, you can determine what color is which gender. The pearling you see (the speckles on their backs) will be molted out by males by 2 years of age, usually only females will have the pearling but males may retain a little of the pearling.
