A noble cockatiel named hohenheim!
Once we get our own house, well adopt a cockatoo!
Hey guys! I adopted hohenheim 2 days ago and everything was going so wonderful! He's been chirping at me and my hubby and I played music for him and he started dancing. I think I'm getting a bit too attached, yesterday I fell asleep next to his cage in a chair instead of next to my hubby haha.

So, a few hours ago I was just about ready to put him to bed and he was acting so happy and suddenly his perch falls and so does he. I pretty much bawled my eyes out. I'm going to the pet shop tomorrow to ask them if it would he right to bring him to the vet or if they would like to check him for booboos...
It happened so quickly..I'm getting him better perches tomorrow...I should have listened and not stuck with the dowel perches..
...Please pray for my little baby bird...
:yellow1:

Edited to add:
He seems okay now and doesn't look noticabley hurt just was very scared and flapped his wings when I tried to take that perch out...

Birds are easy to get attached to....it’s why we love them so much :). It’s pretty scary when they have an accident. Freaks me out every time. Keep an eye on him, and take him to a vet if you think he’s hurt. Definitely recommend getting some new perches, and it sounds like you’re on it! I rarely use the dowels in cages - I use a variety of wood perches, rope perches, a gritty perch, mine have a mineral perch too (tons of cool stuff out there). Different shapes, textures and sizes are good for their feet. Hoping your guy just got a scare, and didn’t hurt himself at all.

I certainly will. He's asleep right now and I'm trying to resist the urge to go into his room to check on him in fear waking up...
Shortly after this post I bought a manzanita perch on Amazon hahaha!
Oh yes in gonna pick up a rope perch probably too, and I have a flat perch as well...
Hopefully..I'll be calling them tomorrow and checking him to make sure!

Remember, where you live, maple and sycamore are plentiful! Be sure no sprays, break off a branch, and jamb it into the cage!
Also, take a swing into Walmart, they have two or three perches that are really nice! Half the price of anywhere else! Ignore the food though!!

Rio (Yellow sided conure) sadly no longer with us
that's why I prefer to get perches that bolt on, the though of them falling or worse the perch falling on them is scary to say the least

Almost all my perches are bolted in. You're best off splurging and investing in some perches like these, the rope perches are really great on their feet and my tiel loves his. I order them either through Chewy or Amazon and they always have good prices. Both the 14 inch and 21 inch on Chewy are around 5 dollars.

Here's my tiel's cage, you can make out most of his perches. It really does make it easier for them to get around if you have a variety of perches, usually in cages I like to try to overlap some so there is a way for my bird to get from the bottom and climb to the top. I think I have only one dowel perch in there but I'm sure it will get replaced within the year. All the others in his cage are either rope perches, pedicure perches (very sturdy and keep their nails from getting long), a swing, and a natural wood perch. It may be worth it to splurge for the safety of your little one. AND SOME MORE TOYS!

I wouldn’t be worried personally. They usually break their fall with the wings a little and if it wasn’t a high fall but vets are always a good idea if you are worried.

I’ve ordered from this guy before on Etsy. He was great, threw in a free perch and he isn’t expensive at all.

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Sounds as if hohenheim is adapting well and probably instinctively flapped wings to cushion the fall. Chances are high he is OK, but a well-check with a certified avian vet is always a good idea.

You'll find a universe of bold-on perches that resemble actual tree branches. Much more comfortable and safer!

It's good to be concerned, but if he's acting normal afterwards (a brief time being a bit stunned is normal) he's probably fine:) Doubtful he's injure or needs to see the vet over this little mishap. From experience, my bird has fallen on several occasions and never been injured. He doesn't, however, get wood perches anymore because he invariably chews them out from beneath his feet and falls:rolleyes: That said, manzanita should be more than hard enough to keep a cockatiel from chewing it up (wish the same could be said for an amazon, but he chews through all wood with ease).

Thank you so much guys! I have a plethora of toys now and bought a rope perch, he's still trying to get used to it....sometimes hes scared to go down? Do I need more perchs? He's not used to the new cage bars and won't climb down that way

My cockatiel has 4 rope perches, a flat wood one, and a couple of wood branch ones in her cage. I try to make paths using the ropes (and I use them to make gradual slopes too), because she almost never climbs cage bars and I want her to be able to access the whole cage. Sometimes the ropes cross over each other so that she can go from one rope to another and get to another section of the cage. The wood perches come out from the side of the cage and almost touch the ropes so that she can jump off the rope to the wood without issue. As your guy settles in, you can watch and see how he moves through the cage and tailor the perches so that he can navigate well. I tend to keep a few spare perches on hand so that I can tweak the setup as needed (or change it up completely on occasion) :)
