I have several kids ( cockatiels) one is 18 all the way to 3 years...I love them all :))
Hello I have a pearl girl...she is about 3 years old. She has mated and has laid eggs in the past.

Late last night we noticed that she is breathing a bit faster and harder. Her wings seem a bit droopy but not too much. She is going around with her mate and her tummy is a bit bigger but not like when she would lay and egg. Could she be egg bound? We are so worried. No avian vets close to where we live. Any suggestions would be great....:yellow1:

I don’t have an answer, but read this thread- scroll down to the last post from Silver Sage. She’s an experienced breeder so you can trust her. The suggestion of a farm vet that works with fowl could be useful to you. I see you’re in Colorado-are you willing to be more specific about where? Someone might know of an avian vet that you don’t know about, or even a local breeder who might be able to offer some advice.

Question on females becoming egg-bound

Oh my, any update on your baby girl? If she is egg-bound then time is of the essence...

I want to thank everyone who is thinking our our sweet pearl. We spent all day Saturday looking for vets in our area (castle rock colorado). We have an appt on thursday for her. In the mean time we have gave her more calcuim and vitamins and have helped her with warm baths and she sits on her little towel off and on during the day. She seems to be less with the breathing fast..and she is not fluffed out in the abdomen area but still looks like she had an egg. Her wings are not as droopy as they were but going to take her to the vet.

This was the first appt we could get for her...one place said we could drop her off to the hospital and the vet would see her when they came in ...we said ok ...then when they found out that she had not seen the vet there...( or anywhere else for that matter) They said they cant see her till she sees the vet...

we are feeling a bit frustrated but we are patient and are trying to help our pearl as much as we can...we are looking forward

If anyone knows of any place that may see her sooner or any suggestions on more we can do for her...any info would be so appreciated.

I apologize for the delay on a report on her since I work nights and yesterday I worked 16 hours...and just got home today. I usually would not take so long to get in touch...so sorry for that...:white1:

you're in castle rock? there's a vet in aurora that I've recently been seeing and they've been very helpful.

https://loving-family-vet.com/veterinarians/
Dr. Weldon

Then there's Dr Summer at homestead animal hospital which has been recommended to me by parrot rescues

also unrelated but my family recently left a dog with a relative that lives in castle rock and he got out and we've haven't had much luck in finding him or even sightings of him so if you happen to see a small dog with long for and a tan coloring please pm me. Sorry I know this is unrelated but we really miss him.

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
I see you are roughly between Denver and Colorado Springs. She'll do best with a certified avian vet, given complex symptoms. Many vets advertise themselves as "exotic" but don't have the necessary education and hardware to properly care for birds.

Using the previously posted search engine, found three using Castle Rock as city:
https://www.aav.org/members/?id=22940592
https://www.aav.org/members/?id=22940597
https://www.aav.org/members/?id=40765383

A standard vet will likely use the "shotgun" approach to diagnosing via most likely meds and awaiting results. Expensive, and a disservice to your bird.

This is a very serious situation, and also extremely painful for them. Egg-binding is 10% fatal without medical intervention, and is so horribly painful for them to go through...Thursday is not soon enough if she is egg-bound and has been all this time already...I'm not saying this to be rude or anything, but Thursday is not soon enough...

I would be looking for any emergency animal/exotics hospital in this situation, as most of them know what to do in this situation, which is oxygen inside of an incubator and taking a quick, plain-film x-ray to confirm or rule-out an egg that has either been laid outside of the reproductive tract, is stuck, or has ruptured inside her, which is actually what this sounds like to me based on her symptoms...I hope that i'm wrong...

In the meantime, try filling the bathroom with lots of dense steam and putting her right in the steam while she is sitting in a container of very warm water. The steam in combination with her belly/abdomen/vent being submerged in the warm water will help her muscles to relax...Also, take olive oil on a Q-Tip, and very gently coat her vent area and just around the inside of her vent opening in the olive oil multiple times a day, especially just after she does the steambath...

Umbrella Cockatoo- 15? years old..I think?
I don't have a tiel, but I know egg binding is a HUGE risk for them...

How is her diet? If she is getting enough nutrients (barring other physiological problems), is it possible that she could just be laying an egg but not actually bound?

Egg binding itself can be an emergency situation, so do be VERY cautious with that.

Hello just a small update. Today I found a fantastic foundation that is helping us with our baby pearl. They are called Gabriel Foundation. They looked her over and said that they dont think she is egg bound but took her to their specialist. She is in the hospital now overnight.. They are testing her and we will know more tomorrow. Thank you so much for the support you all have givin us

They are amazing...A young man named Eric told about the vets that see the birds there...but when I found I was not able to get the carecredit to help us take care of her vet bills...so we facing hard hard decisions...I was told to call the foundation to see if they had someone who could see her...my hubby and daughter took our baby girl to the foundation and they said they do not believe that she is egg bound her tummy was too soft...So we are not sure at this point what it is...but she is with the vet and we should know more tomorrow..I will keep updating as we know...

Just a side note yes we are in castle rock and since you posted we have been looking at doggies around to see if you see your little friend. Just a thought have you called the buddy center here in castle rock...they take in dogs that have lost their families...

When I first moved here several years ago we had a female Tiel that we out the glass door that was cracked open...We could not find her anywhere...but we called the buddy center and she was there...they said a person in the neighborhood saw her scrapping it up with crows in the school yard. She went right to him and he knew she was a loved pet. He took her to the buddy center...so please look them up online they do post pictures and also call them if you have not...your buddy could be there...Here in Castle Rock hope this helps you.:white1::yellow1: I came back to add that I can not send a message to you so I wanted to make sure you know why i posted this here for you...Good luck on finding your buddy
