My Cockatiel Keeps Regurgitating

Hi,

My cockatiel is 13 years old and for the first time in his life he started to regurgitate seeds in the last week. I know it’s behavioral because he only does it when he is in the cage. He regurgitates and then eats them again. Today I had him out of the cage most of the day and he didn’t do it at all. As soon as he returned it to the cage, he started doing it again, repeatedly. Is there something I can do to have him stop doing it? He has never mated before. Will it help if he mates? Please advise.

Thanks!

Is there some toy he is doing this to/for? If so I would remove it from the cage, at least temporarily to see if he stops.

I don't think any of my Tiels have done this except for the two breeding pair when they had babies and MAYBE the male to female before mating.

I have had amazon parrots regurgitate for me and when I first got her my African grey did it a few times.

Because it is out of the ordinary behavior for your bird the best thing to do to be sure is take him/her to the vet for a check up. might be more going on and you have to chatch these things as early as possible.

No, he does not do this with any specific toy. He doesn’t it on his right foot. I did talk to a vet over the phone and he said it’s most likely hormonal. Other than this, he is like his normal self, eating, active, full of energy. If he was sick, he would continue to regurgitate outside of the cage.
