My cockatiel pair, Rue and Boo, both lost their mates in the past. I set up the nestbox recently (March 22) and the two both expressed lots of interest in it. I wasn't sure if Rue has ever laid an egg or nested before but I was pleasantly surprised to find an egg in the box yesterday (March 31).

I'm so excited for them!! It's been almost exactly one year since Peach passed away and it was a very sad spring for me last year because of it. I rescued Rue in December 2018 and her and Boo have really become a lovely pair.

Ah this is so wholesome. I remember how heartbreaking the loss of Peach was. I am glad Boo has a new mate to cherish, and possibly some new babies on the way!

I remember, too! It was a year ago this week. It was definitely a hard spring for our family but I am so hoping for babies this time. Boo and Rue deserve happiness after having been through losses. Thank you for the comments everyone I really appreciate them!

Just kidding, I guess Rue wasn't done because we have a 5th egg now! This is the father sitting on the eggs.

Update on the eggs...

Sadly none of the eggs have hatched and tomorrow is 21 days after the last egg was laid. Despite their continual incubating (never leaving the eggs without warmth for more than a minute or two) and so I will be removing them sometime this week if nothing happens.

While I am sad none hatched, I am just glad the pair is okay (as last year my hen died while on eggs) and so this means they are doing their job, eggs just weren't fertile this time around. And that happens! I'll be taking the eggs out and I'll see if they will lay again. Just a practice round it seems....

I have no clue about egg incubation time, but here's a little story the breeder told me about our little Trigger. She said the last egg of the clutch was still unhatched 5 days after the last one had hatched... so she decided to give it 2 more days... 2 days later she reached in and removed this last egg, assuming it was infertile...

...on the way into the house, she hears a tiny "Peep!!" from the egg! So she put it back and Trigger was hatched the next day! :)

Even if nothing hatches this time, it's still beautiful to see Rue and Boo working on a family together. Congrats!

I'd leave them in a bit longer (depending on how long you have already waited). You never know...
