I have a bit of a problem. I just bought a bird stand for my cockatiel, Princess. She has a dowel she uses that is 3/4 of an inch. Don’t worry, this is for her play gym. She has actual branches inside her cage. Anyways, the new play stand I noticed has a 1 inch diameter dowel. Is this ok for her to use? I can’t change the size of the dowel with this stand nor return it. I hope she can use it but I don’t want to hurt her feet. Any feedback as to whether or not i can use this would be appreciated. Thank you.

Commonly, the larger the diameter of the perch, the less pressure is placed on the pads of the claw, which is a good thing.

For a reference, see the Amazon Forum and the Sticky Thread (highlighted in light blue) titled: I Love Amazons - ... With in this Huge Thread is a Segment that is titled something like: Getting to the Foot of the Problem. Whether you have a Mac or a Cockatiel you will find it and the following Post or two helpful in defining the correct perch size for you Parrot. FYI: The vast majority of that thread is helpful for any Parrot species.

Thank you so much for your help on the dowel. I read the thread on the Amazons. It’s very interesting. My girl, Princess, was actually my first bird and a rescue. She was never handled or trained. The vet actually wanted me to give her to someone else, because she was a year old at the time and wild. After many discouraging times and bloody wounds, she’s pretty well hand trained and friendly. Your thread on the Amazons reminded me as to why I’m so happy I never gave up on trying to work with her and give up. She has made the two years and counting working with her worth it.

P.S., the stand is assembled and ready to go. She’s a bit scared of it at the moment, so at the moment, I’m working on just having the stand within her sight. When she gets more used to it being around, I plan on trying to get her to go on it.

Happy to hear the Thread was of help.
A couple of pointers regarding the great stand.
-Look for a couple of small bowls that will fit within the ones provided on the stand. You will find them much easier and faster to change out food and water, plus clean.
-Take a standard newspaper with its natural fold, cut in from one of the open side at or near center of the sheet and then a short cut either side on the natural fold.
-For looks, consider rounding the outer edge of the folded newspaper. How much you remove will depend on the size of the seed catcher.
-To install the newspaper slide the cut opening into the centerfold and lay it flat.
Enjoy...

FYI: Thank You for not listening to your Vet!!!

Thank you for the tips. I’m using the newspaper like you suggested. I’m having trouble finding smaller bowls that will fit the holder of her stand at the moment but I’m still looking.

Try checking out pudding bowls or like products.
Also check out kitten bowls

They can be difficult to find, but well worth it.
