Hello all. Me again. Was back at the pet store visiting my little budgie today and have struck up a friendship with the sweetest girl that works the bird room there. I had been talking to her about her pet tiel the other day and I guess she could tell I was interested in one. So after my bonding session she told me to come look at the babies they had in the back they are hand-feeding. A Rubbermaid box with 4 ADORABLE babies was staring right at me and the prettiest cockatiel I have ever seen, a white-faced pied, came right up to me and in his adorable birdie language was practically begging me to take him out for a snuggle session. I mean how do you say no to that kind of invitation, so I did and we instantly fell in love. I got kisses and he got lots of pets and wanted to be as close to me as possible. I asked the girl if I could hold the others to make sure his behavior wasn’t just because he’s a weaning baby right now, and nope......the others didn’t want nearly the same amount of love from me as him. After a wonderful 30 minute snuggle session I feel I have been chosen. I told them I would think about it tonight but I already know tomorrow morning I will be going straight there to put a deposit on him. It was love at first sight/snuggle. So I came back Here to happily report that I will now be the proud owner of my little budgie and a sweet baby cockatiel. I’ll try and get a picture when I’m there tomorrow. He’s seriously the prettiest tiel I have ever seen (in my opinion of course). He is primarily white and very dark grey with the grey spots very reminiscent of the East a fairy cow is spotted. Very bold grey patches. Now to think of a name. I still haven’t been able to decide on a name for my Lutino budgie - Omlette, Fish Woodstock and Teewty Bird are the choices so far.

Ohhhhh Woodstock is an awesome name for a lutino budgie!!!! I may have to use that one for one of my yellow budgies, thanks for the idea!!

And yay! Congrats!! Tiels are just *so* wonderful. Have either bird been DNA tested, or do you just assume he is a male?

So exciting!! And I see the MBS(multiple bird syndrome) has spread to another person!

@Bug_n_flock.....glad you like the Woodstock idea. Feel free to use. It’s perfect for a primarily yellow bird.

No, neither bird has been dna tested. I’m making assumptions on their sex based on things that are said indicate sex but aren’t proven scientific methods. My budgie being Lutino won’t show the typical coloring in the cere, but apparently can show some faint blue or brown coloring and he definitely has a tint of blue in it. For the tiel I read in several places that in the white-faced cockatiel, the males have an all white face and females will have some grey. This guy definitely has a pure white face and head. He’s also a very hefty bird and I know with a lot of parrot species the males are typically a bit larger/bulkier than the females, so perhaps??? Again.....all assumptions based on lore but I always feel like I have to refer to my pets as hes or shes so that’s what I’m going with.

And YES!!!! MBS is a real and very contagious disease. I had it years ago and have obviously relapsed. All I can do is be thankful my home can’t actually accommodate more than 2 cages unless I want to start sticking them in my kids rooms or bathrooms. LOL

Ok. So I just went to visit and had an even better experience today. Although my memory did not serve me well and he/she has dark grey on its cheeks. So now I am wondering if from what I have read if it might be a female. To be honest having a female scares me a bit with the egg laying and possible egg binding. Also, any comments on experience in personality differences between the two? This would be a very handled and human-experienced baby so I can at least say it will have an excellent hand feeding and weaning upbringing with humans which I know is super important. Going to do more research in female tiels and go back again to visit this afternoon. Couldn’t bring myself to make a decision immediately and put down the deposit with this little nagging fear, although our interaction was perfect in every way.

Tiel hens can be little egg machines, but there are ways to reduce the major risks(humidity, no dark places, plenty of calcium, maybe some raspberry leaf tea or other things(read up on this for yourself before trying), a controlled light/dark cycle). I have never had a cockatiel hen, so unfortunately I can't say anything in my own experience. But the hens from what I have heard are VERY sweet and cuddly birds.

Males do adorable heart wings, bang their heads like little rock enthusiests, whistle, flirt, and still make time for a head scritch and cuddle session. When Alex is feeling cuddly, he has always(since he was a baby) made this soft quiet squeek noise, it melts my heart every. Single. Time. He loves whistling at stuffed animals, feet, other birds, small mammals, RC dogs or other robotic toys, etc. He screams at sirens(and LOUD. His volume is not as ear shattering as it once was, but if he shrieks in your ear, everything goes quiet and ring-y out of that ear for a bit), he also is surprised every morning when the sun comes up and needs to scream to tell everyone all about it. When he was younger it was worse, and it wouldn't seem to make a difference if his cage was covered or not. Yipe! Now that we are both older, Alex sleeps in the bird room and not my bed room, so this is less of a huge deal.

In short, I guess I'm saying that there are differences, but definite pros and cons to males AND females. :)

Well I’m happy (and nervous) to say I sealed the deal today and put my deposit on the little guy/gal. The store showed me that my grey face theory may not be ironclad with 2 store tiels they have with grey faces but are dna sexed male. It is what it is at this point. I will dna the bird in a couple of weeks so I can be prepared with what to watch out for if indeed it is a female. But this little bird has won my heart in a very short time and I think it’s going to be an amazing bird no matter if it’s a boy or a girl. Regardless of the sex, names have been chosen for both my new little ones. Woodstock for my Lutino budgie and since the tiel is almost black and white, Snoopy seemed perfect. Here’s hoping they become fast friends.

Young Cockatiels have the appearance of female birds until the first molt.
not sure if that holds true of all color mutations but I think it does.
So the grey on the face may change over to all white after first molt.
Whatever you end up with I think the whiteface Cockatiels are stunningly beautiful.

Omega is a female teil that silversage took in from a wonderful young man who had to re-home her. She is lovey, and she posts pictures if her riding on everyone's shoulders! So I think Snoppy will be wonderful either way! Especially since you were chosen!!!
My first GCC Burt the Bird ( thought male, until ten years later she laid an egg!) choose me. She was scruffy , runty and only had one working nostril,.... So I almost choose the pretty one next to her. But a very wise bird keeper came over and said when a parrot chooses you it's a very special thing. She urged me to watch Burt, and see how she wasn't that way with anyone else. I thank you bird lady!!!! We had a wonderful life together.

Congratulations again choosen one!!! And congratulations on Woodstock!!! MBS has been going around the forum lately!!!! Apparently it's even an online virus!!! @@

Yes, I have to remember there could be much changing after the first molt although I hope his overall appearance stays close to the same. In my opinion he is so unusual and stunning looking. I can’t even find a picture online that looks close to him. I’m doing his photo session tomorrow. lol

Your whiteface is gorgeous!!!! I think they are a beautiful mutation. I am really excited about Snoopy. This will be the first bird I have had that I will have begun bonding with while still being handled. I will be one of only 3 people in his life until he gets to come home with me in a couple months. I hope that helps set up a strong relationship from the start. I already can’t wait to go back and visit tomorrow!!!!

I have 3 Cockatiels that I raised from the egg.
The 2 females are the friendliest Tiels in my flock. When I enter the room Mango starts going zip-zap back and forth for me to notice her. She is a scratch-oholic and so is her sister Angle. They fight for a place at the door and I have to try to scratch both at the same time or there is no peace.
Despite the friendliness of these 2 they wont hang out with me or ride my shoulder.
Cheeky the whiteface in the photo is the father.
