New 4 month old baby question

I have been a bird mom for quite a while (parakeets) but we just brought home a four month old cockatiel. He's been here for three days, and I am trying to just let him settle into his new surroundings and not bother him too much, only putting my hand in the cage to change water and add food. He didn't eat until he had been with us for 18 hours, but he's been eating well ever since. He's still afraid of hands, which I would expect after only three days in new surroundings. I will try to get his picture up here, but I'm a bit rusty at this! This is close ~~ :yellow1: :07: Got it up, but it’s sideways.

My problem is that the bird store where I got him wants me to weigh him tomorrow, and then call it into the store. I really don't want to have to grab him to put him on the scale. He looks fine and has been eating oat groats like crazy. I had his weight done at the store, and done on my scale as soon as we got home, and then the next day. He went from 78 grams when he got home down to 70 grams (expected, since he didn't eat for awhile.) I'm confident that he's gained back quite a bit of what he lost. What would you do? I will try to put the scale in the cage and see if I can get him to get on it, but that's as far as I really want to go.

You could take him back to the shop you bought him from and let them take his weight.
That would let them be the bad guys.
The car ride could cause more stress that weighing him yourself, you would know what will work best for your little guy.

he is very cute.

Scale in cage at the bottom and bribe with millet? But you need to weigh first thing in the morning to get the best idea on weight...

Thanks for suggestions. I was able to get Ollie out of the cage by having him step up to a little ladder from the cage. He flew around a bit but got back on the ladder and I settled him onto the scale. Weight gotten - 72 grams. He's headed in the right direction!

Excellent work! Glad he’s going in the right direction. It also sounds like you purchased him from a good store, since they want to keep tabs on his initial progress.

He’s so stinking cute! Cockatiels steal my heart every time. We would all love more pictures!

This thread might be helpful as he settles into your home. So glad you’re here.
