Hello Fellow Cockatiel Owners!

One of our birds got chilling on her perch and got spooked when she heard something fall in the other room. She flew and landed in our kitchen sink, into a cooking dish that was soaking, but had some olive oil residue in it. Does anyone have any advice as to other dish soaps aside from Dawn, that may work? We have Mrs. Meyers here (radish scent). Please advise if you can :(

Dawn is the go-to liquid soap of choice, but better to first evaluate how much olive oil residue remains? Biggest concern is whether your bird may have aspirated (breathed) liquids after landing.

How would you know if they breathed in oil? Her breathing seems fine - no sneezing either. Just lots of grooming herself.

Chances are you'd see immediate wheezing and unmistakable efforts to ride the lings of fluid. I've never experienced olive oil on a bird but imagine preening would increase. If minimal amount, all is likely well. Can you upload images? (easiest via Imgur or similar hosting service)

Says page does not exist... no image?

Are her feathers covered in oil at all? Any changes in behavior or droppings?

Dawn really is the go to dish detergent for this. My little BeeBee parrot Max got a huge glob of mayonnaise on him (my fault), which initially I tried to wipe off, but only succeeded in mashing into his feathers. We carefully used a diluted solution to gently wipe his feathers down, being careful to stay away from his nares , eyes and ears. Worked well.
I would hesitate to use anything with scents in it. Dawn is pretty cheap and you don't need much.

Umbrella Cockatoo- 15? years old..I think?
I know this involved oil, and that does change things a bit, but I will tell you know about plain old water:

Breathing issues (when it comes to damage to air-sacs or water in air sacs) would be noticeable 99% of the time within a few minutes to a few hours at most (reportedly). I am not saying there aren't exceptions, but Noodles was dunking her head under clean water on purpose the other day (totally under), and then started making a crazy sound that scared the **** out of me, so I took the water away and called the vet -he said that it could be very serious or nothing. He indicated that if that if there was a gurgling sound that continued, that it would be an absolute emergency. He said if it was brief and just kind of odd sounding, it was also possible that the sound could be coming from her nares, in which case, she basically just got some water in her nose. That turns out to be what it was ---ugh...for all of her intelligence....From what I understand, if water were in the air sacs, there would likely be tail bobbing and a sound, coupled with strange behaviors (in theory)...and things would decline quickly.

How much oil are we talking? I am assuming it was cool?

I agree w/ Dawn suggestion but I would caution you that they seem to be marketing a new, super-concentrated variety, so just be careful...and stick with the original if possible. If you cannot find it, you have to do what you have to do, but don't do off-brand just to be safe.
