Lesser vs Greater sulphur crested

I understand the lesser and greater sulphur cockatoos are different species, and occur in isolated regions naturally. Does that mean they cannot breed in captivity? Or if you've ever heard of it occurring is it then like a mule, or a liger where the offspring is unable to breed?

Sorry if the question is odd, my boyfriend posed it to me and I had no answer, nor did google

Just because they come from different locations they belong to the same genus Cacatus Vieillot. They are White Cockatoos. It's unlikely that they would breed with other white cockatoos species in the wild, they stay in the same family circle. However in captivity it is possible if there is a mixed collection. To be honest i really don't know if the offspring would be infertile but i would think not. They breed Ringnecks & Alexanderines together to get the colour mutations quicker in the Alex's

Thanks for the answers guys, we were contemplating this all when we heard there was a greater that needed to find a home, and our names were mentioned...We brought it home tonight but the previous O is sure she's a she, so no problems here with breeding if they get attached to one another.

That being said, this bid is going to be trouble and needs some serious retraining. I'm not really sure what we got ourselves into

. She's huge, weighs more than some macaws I've held, very over weight, she lunges and hisses at us, she is in her mid 20's and has had one wing amputated, she attacks feet!!! Any advice?

I personally don't agree in mixing different types together, but that's just me. Another thing you have to make sure is sometimes one can be very aggressive and may kill the other one. Just not long ago someone posted in here their male Moluccan I believe tries to kill their female Umbrella. Someone was trying to sell me a Male Lesser Sulphur Crested to go with my female, he's killed his mate. They become aggressive when trying to mate or jealousy.

Good point Mikey I wasn't aware there was a rehoming going on here. And no i don't agree with mixing the species either.

Yes i would be careful with the new arrival & take it slow with the training. It could take her a long time to settle into her new environment. I think it's sometimes a case of when she is ready to accept you than the other way round. I always give a new bird a good 12 months to really get to know me before i can fully trust it. Sometimes longer.

It was a fear that they may get close and try something, I guess. I hadn't even considered it till the boyfriend said something. Baxter, the new addition, is a piece of work. If I can ever get To her food dish to feed her I'll be surprised. She's relentlessly trying to attack me this morning. From what I can see her feet are raw from only having one perch. She has an amputated wing. She has thin features/some balding under the wings. She seems to be unusually fat lower down, like a saggy fat pouch. I am very eager to take her to our vet, but I wont be getting her anywhere at this point without loosing part of my arm.
