Hey everyone,
I'm new to the forums here. Just wanted to introduce myself and say Hi.

We are in the process of adopting a Medium Sulphur Crested 'Too, named Nicky. He is around 15 years old and may the sweetest bird I have ever met.

I am a former zookeeper and vet tech and in all my years I have never met a bird this sweet, relaxed and quiet (especially a too)...have spent time with him and have barely heard a sound, just soft murmuring and chatter. The wonderful woman who has been caring for him for the past year says in all that time she has heard him squawk 2 or 3 times.

We are SUPER excited to open our home to a new family member and I cannot wait to spend time with him and get to know you guys here better in the future.

All the best....TONY

Thank you for adopting this bird. cockatoos are given up so many times. Sounds like this one has a wonderful, forever home.

Thanks everyone!!!

We are REALLY excited...we are having our third visit with him this week. This will be the first introduction between he and our two boys, Jordan i 4 & Dylan is 3.

We have been spending a LOT of time getting the boys acquainted with how to behave around the bird...just want to make sure we are off to a great start.

The other thing I discovered is that his name is actually "NicNic"...which is cool, I like it better than Nicky anyhow.

We are planning a trip to Bird Paradise for a shopping spree for NicNic this week as well...letting the boys stock him up on Toys and such for his big Welcome Home Party next week. (actually just a very quiet arrival so he is relaxed in his new home...no matter how excited we may be!!!)

6 year old Maluccan Cockatoo
Hi Tony...
Linda and I just joined this site a few minutes ago. We are also in the proccess of obtaining a cockatoo. Ours is a 6-8 yr old Maluccan named "Pretty Boy", but we're gonna try to add the extra Sam to the end. Linda and I plan to check in on this site often. I've had birds on and off my whole life, but this will be linda's first. This will be my second Cockatoo. We're both very excited to bring Pretty boy home in a couple of weeks, and soend time getting to know him, and him us. We do not have a photo of him on here yet, but with me being a photographer, you can be assured that the minute I can start taking photos of him I will be posting them here. Good luck with your adoption.

Umbrella Cockatoo - Ricky
Good Luck to you Bruce and Linda and to you to Tony, Cockatoo's are rewarding, hard work and can be in a pain in the butt or maybe thats just mine, but they are well worth it. I agree with Kitt for preparing I wish I had that chance with Ricky she was all over the place the first week she came. Again good luck to you all.

Just wanted to give you guys an update...

Nic Nic has been home for about a week now and to be completely honest, my wife and I are wondering if we hit the jackpot.

I have worked with parrots and cockatoos for years as a zookeeper and vet tech, and NEVER have I met a bird this easy to care for and get along with.

In 7 days he has squawked 3 times and they were actually pleasant sounds, soft and sweet.

He has started saying his name all the time and tries to mimic us often, although in typical Too fashion, he sounds garbled at times.

He rarely drops food out of his cage and even though he plays with toys all the time, he is the single most NON-destructive bird I have ever seen.

We have fingers crossed that this is more than just a honeymoon period, but since he is already pushing 16 years old or so, we are hoping he is set in these ways.

Hopefully he will stay like that for you. I have one that's the same way. Of all my birds, he is the quietest and the cleanest. He is 14.

1 Lesser Sulphur Crested Cockatoo and 4 cockatiels
Sounds like you got a very sweet bird..... I have a lesser sulphur crested who is 15 years old. She's not very noisy...just occasionally, but she has starting laying eggs (she thinks I'm her mate). Another story another time.
Enjoy your new bird!

thats wonderfull! its so nice that you gave him a home, it sounds like hes really taking to you guys. i dont mean to sour the mood but just make sure you dont pet him down the back to prevent hormonal behavior. it sounds like you have a truly wonderful bird! how is he with your kids?

He is great with the kids. They are, obviously, only allowed to handle him when I am there.

My 4 year old likes to tickle him under the chin and the 3 year old likes it when NicNic is on his arm.

They both help me every morning the little one helps me change his water and feed him while the older one fills his foraging toys with treats.

We have been careful to avoid encouraging hormonal behavior. We have some petting time, but I try to make our time together more about games and playing.

Teaching him a few tricks already...he also likes to fetch his wiffle ball.
