Hey everyone, I'm new on this forum and a few days ago have added a 5 month old slender billed cockatoo (long billed corrella) to my family. He's not adjusting well at all, he has been shaking over the past couple days and screaming and not eating much. I've tried covering his cage, turning on music, tv, leaving him alone, giving him attention etc. Nothings working and he seems to get more terrified as the days go by. Does anyone have any advice on what I should do, I feel horrible watching him so frightened. :[

Please get him to an Avian vet as soon as possible, the shaking and not eating really would worry me.

Not eating normal is a clear sign that a avian vet should look at the bird

Thank you, I'm going to take him to one tomorrow. Hope everything is ok, I think the new change of environment has been really stressing him out.

Im glad your taking him to the vet. I understand the stress of a new home can take a toll, but the continued shaking and not eating........

How was the room you put him in?? Is it a busy room??? Other pets????

Please keep us posted.

Welcome! Congrats on your new baby. Couple questions: Where did you get your bird from (breeder, pet store, re-homed)? Are you feeding it the same diet it was getting before? What was its previous housing conditions like (outside in aviary, pet store..etc.)? Is the cage that you have similar to the one it had before? Where is your cage positioned in the house? Was he housed with another bird?

Number one would most def take to avian vet.

If you didn't get him from a pet store then I would also contact the previous place you got him from and see if they can help. If it was a reputable breeder then they should be more than willing to give you a hand. If it was a re-home then maybe the old owners can come by for a visit - might cheer him up and make him feel more comfortable in his new environment.

The screaming, shaking, not eating sounds like hes a really stressed out baby and not making the easiest transition :(. Its hard but he will eventually settle in.

I got him from a pretty reputable bird store and have been feeding him
a mix of seeds, nuts and some dried fruit that they were feeding him.
His appetites back and he's been eating normally again. I'm just
concerned because he's still very timid and around evening time
he starts freaking out, squaking, and hunching over flapping his wings slightly
covering his cage calms him down after about 20 minutes. Has anyone else had similar experiences when you've brought your birds home?

Seed, nuts & dried fruit is not a bablance diet for a corella. It needs fruit & veggies & sprouts, all kinds of healthy foods.

This is only a suggestion as he is only 5 months old & rather still a baby it wouldn't hurt to make up a warm mushy food & feed him from a teaspoon just before bed. It does settle a new baby. I am having the same problem with an Eclectus although younger but he will not settle at bed time until he gets a crop full of warm formula.
