I have been in hospital since Wednesday.
We are getting ready for the transplant.
How long is the birds memory?
He has been in he house alone while Debbie has been at work and with me.
She keeps coming home and finding him on the light fittings in the loungeroom.
She tells me he is cranky and short tempered.
He gets on her shoulder and refuses to get off. he screams out for her when she leaves the room.
I think I may have lost my position as main caretaker.
He will get onto a broom stick for her on command so she can get him down, but he is being a bit of a bugger. I am told he is biting her harder than usual. He has started this habit of cleaning under and around her fingernails. But he gets very persistant it it till he takes those little bits of loose skin from around your cuticals. He is also getting on with other people since Im not about, getting on strangers shoulders and being sort of canky, yet demanding attention.

First off how are you doing? Hope you'll soon be back home and out of the hospital? What sort of transplant are you having and how long are you likely to be in hospital?

Skippah will remember you, he may make you suffer for a while after your home, he doesn't understand that you need to be where you are at the moment. You and Skippah have always had a great relationship, so he's cranky because you are away and he just doesn't know why.

I think I may have lost my position as main caretaker.
I think once your home, and he has made ya suffer for a while he's gonna be back to wanting his Dad do things for him.

He is also getting on with other people since Im not about, getting on strangers shoulders and being sort of canky, yet demanding attention.
Thats not really a bad thing, it just would have been nice if you'd been around to see this. When your with Skippah he doesn't feel the need (or want) to be with anyone else.

You just concentrate on getting better and back home again, He will remember you really he will. Look how he made you suffer when you had him clipped, but he soon forgave you. :D

Parrots have very good long term memories.

I remember reading Konrad Lorenz's great book "Solomon's Ring" when I was a kid. In there he tells a story of a parrot who lost a mate (another bird, not even a parrot species). It had died. Over a year later, the people brought home another bird that looked the same. The parrot immediately called the name of his lost friend.

Your parrot will remember you. And good luck on your surgery.

(((Red))), bless your heart and I'm hoping that the transplant happens smoothly and a rapid, healthy recovery.

I'm in agreement with everyone's offerings regarding Skippah. You just take whatever time you need to make this transplant happen in a positive light and get back on your feet again!

Many thoughts are going your way!!!

Well, the catheter is out, so thats a plus.
Tomorrow I hear their plans for a month or so of Dialysis, and then hopefully a kidney transplant. This is the 1st time since I arrived that I don't have anything stuck in me. I like that,...a lot.
I am a bit of a baby when it comes to procedures, so I am not looking forward to what is coming up. I wanna go home and play with the animals.
I will keep you informed.

Red, Man ... I didn't know you were in a bad way ... first off, we all here wish you the best of luck and a speedy recovery (hope that's OK, ya know, coming from an American and all ... ;) )

Have no fears about Skippah forgetting about you ... it won't happen, espically if you have a really strong bond with him ... all will be good!

Get yourself better and get back here and start raising "heck" again!

Yeah birds have really great memories.

I once read an article about a woman who made a very large aviary in her house. Another woman heard about this and eventually turned one of her very neglected birds over to her. The bird was extremely skiddish and malnourished. When the bird lived at the aviary for over a year, the same woman came back with another neglected bird that she was turning over (they were large birds like cockatoo's, macaws, etc). Well the original bird recognized this woman, hid in the corner, while all the other birds that had been living with this rescued bird for the past year *attacked* the woman, forcing her out of the aviary.

Isn't that amazing?

Wish I still had the article, but it was on the old computer.

Red, my heart and best wishes go out to you as you begin this long journey. I don't blame you for not wanting to be poked and pinched all the time. Get well and healthy soon!

Yeah, I read that article as well ... it was on a website, I am sure I can find it again ... I know Chirsty will know where it is ... when I find it again, I will post a thread here ...

HA!! This is funny, they really are the leaders, they are just smart enough to allow Red to think that he is!

Quick update.
Got over night leave.
Am home feeding the animals.
Am staying out till midnight, then back to the hospital.
Playing with the bird and the dogs.
Watching all my taped stuff.
Love being out for a while.
Going to Q.E.H on Friday for a yuckier of tests.
If they think there a chance they can squeeze another six months out of this kidney, Its worth scaring the shit out of me, doing horrible tests while Im awake. If the tests show nothing, its back to my bed at 6G. If it looks like they can do something, then I am up for two day, to two weeks at the Q.E.H.
I will have to do some dialysis before I get transplanted, no matter what.
The bird is OK, a bit more standoffish, and being quite pally with Deb.
They are much closer than they were last week.
The bird brow beats her into patting him until he has had enough, then starts feeding and preening.
So all seems OK.
Dogs are going nuts under my feet.

Its nine pm, so I will report in later.
