Nic Nic..."World's Quietest" Eleonora Cockatoo
This past July we opened our home to Nic Nic, the most amazing Eleonora Cockatoo I have ever met.

A few weeks after Nic arrived we noticed our youngest son, Dylan (3 years old) was having difficulty breathing, especially at night and was constantly congested.

For the past few months we have been working to keep Nic Nic clean and his dander down with air purifiers, constant cleans etc.

Dylan's test results show that he is very allergic to Nic Nic.

We have tried everything and spent a small fortune, but it looks like Nic Nic will be returning to the woman (and her rescue) who we adopted him from.

I;m not sure why I wrote this here for you all, but I cannot express the sorrow my wife and I are feeling right now, never mind trying to figure out how to break this news to our two boys who love Nic to death.

Anyway, thanks for your time...just needed to tell someone who might understand what we are going through.

:(

After your heart heals there are birds that do not have power down like toos do. How sad to have to give him back. I know she will be missed a great deal and she will miss your family also. Our hearts go out to you and Nic Nic.

How sad and unfortunate that it turned out this way. I am heartbroken for your two boys though. I know breaking the news can be crushing but know that you did all you could to make it work. An that eventually you will find another companion to share your wonderful family with, feathered or not it will be a lucky pet for years to come.

I'm sorry to hear this. Unfortunately it's one of those unforeseen circomstances when it comes to birds such as the cockatoo. Although I have only had Mac about 3 months or so, it would break my heart to have to give him up. So I know how your feeling.

Sad news all round, sorry to hear this. Please explain it gently to your sons so they dont blame the 3yo. Its not his fault about his allergies. It sounds like you have done so much to try and improve the situation.

awww...this breaks my heart, not only for you and your family but your Nic Nic. Will you be informed when she is re-homed? I'm just thinking it might be nice for you to know where she will be and that she will be well taken care of, or is that too much to ask? Not sure how the system works.

We can't save them all, but children outgrow allergies... and as other posters mentioned their are species who really aren't the same. I hear your pain, I'm allergic to dogs cats and most of all 'toos. I have two dogs, two cats, a 'too and I work with dozens of animals on a daily basis. After a life time of it, to be honest I only notice when I'm AWAY from animals for an extended period of time... "Oh yeah, this is what breathing is like. Huh..."

I missed this post before.

How is everything going? It's unfortunate that you had to rehome him, but you did the right thing.

Have you considered getting a less powdery bird? It might be a good idea to allergy test your son before bringing it into the home, but with any luck, he's only allergic to some birds.
