One cockatiel from a breeder, one cockatiel rescued. One lovebird rescued and currently adopting one cockatoo :D
Ok so this is a bit of a long story and I would really appreciate any help or advice anyone can give me!
So- currently I don't have any large birds, but I work at a vet and I volunteer at an exotic bird rescue. Needless to say one of these amazing birds picked me stole my heart. So a little background- I have chronic migraines and tension headaches which medicine doesn't seem to be able to control, it's all stress triggered. I am soon to be engaged and will be married in two years, when my now boyfriend graduates from college. Now this triton too named Taco was heavily abused in his previous home. He repeats things like "I'm ganna beat you birdbrain" and "Taco's a sick b******" he is over weight because he was fed pizza on a regular basis and he has breathing problems because they smoked around him, he even asks for cigarettes. But he is the sweetest thing when he is around me. He will sit in my lap and talk and cuddle for hours, he has even stepped up for my boyfriend (he is the second man he has ever done that for because he was abused by a man). Now, back to my headaches, when I spend time with Taco, they go away. It was the first time in months that I had experienced what it felt like to be without pain. Taco and I would be saving each other.
Now my problem/question is this: is it easy to find an apartment that will allow him? I don't want to adopt him now and then not be able to care properly for him in the future. My boyfriend just wants to know that we will be able to have him when we get an apartment or townhouse and how much tritons cost a month on average so we can plan ahead. I don't want to keep him from a good forever home if that's what's best for him, I just want to know the facts to know if I can be that home.

Apartment is a no! Townhouse is ok as I had a Macaw and a Cockatoo in one at one point. Never had any complaints. It all depends where you shop, what you plan on feeding, etc to plan a budget. 35lbs of pellets last me for 6 months, we buy treats of all kind(? Amount?), fruits and veggies around 10and a week as I work in a restaurant so I can get them cheap through work. Then we cook for them, etc. But we also have 15 birds to feed and I guess budget is like $25 a week?

13yr. old male umbrella cockatoo,
we call him Amigo!

7yr. old Goffin cockatoo, she IS Sassy!!
They certainly do burrow out a place in your heart and I've found with my U2 that,,if I'm not relaxed, he's not either so I can see how that could help with your headaches. I'm not familiar with triton cockatoo noise level, but I would guess that the thicker the walls between you and your neighbors, the better!

I'm not sure I've ever heard him scream more than 3 or 4 times when the other toos were sounding off (we have 3 or 4 wild caught who all like to scream and don't talk and get the entire too room going lol) he would much rather talk than scream. Though I know that may very well change depending on the atmosphere.

Between the loudness, Macaw have the Cockatoos beat....IF my neighbors in the townhouse can tolerate my Macaw's scream, you should be fine. They really never said a single word nor did we receive any sort of complaints from the Home Association.

Triton Cockatoos are really beautiful! But my first love is a Moluccan and Umbrellas come second after that. I recently had a chance to get a Moluccan but I had to think about Java. A Moluccan is what I've always wanted, but we got Java first. So my partner and I had a discussion that we don't always get what we want, but what we meant to have. Which is Java! You will love your Cockatoo as they're wonderful birds to own, just make sure you train him properly, that's the success in owning a well trained Cockatoo!!! Yes they do scream at times and it gets ear busting, BUT if mine didn't scream for a week, I would be worried. They're all are pretty quiet most of the time as they all barely even scream. More chatter then anything else. Our house is never quiet and we don't like a quiet house anyway. Good luck!!!
