hello parrot owners. i've just bought a 4 year old ducorps cockatoo. 1st thought absolute stunning bird. only had it 1 day in my house and its silly tame with any person that goes to it . it needs a lot of attention 24/7.

i just have a question regarding food. its been brought up on johnson and jeff #1 parrot food.

i bought some kaytee exact chunky food to try it on and it loves it .

some breeders close to me say the kaytee is a full diet for the parrot and you dont need to feed it anything else or give it any vitamin suppliments (in water) if its eating this kaytee food .

is this true ? or does the bird still need fruits and veg's ?

i know the foods not to feed it (pear, chocolate and dairy products)

Fruit and veg is always 'needed' even if on a 'full' pellet type diet. Merlin is on harrissons and whilst no suppliment is 'needed' he still gets fruits and veggies, although I don't panic about not giving them to him daily because of the diet he is on.

I don't know much about kaytee food, so will leave that for the others.

Would love to hear more about your ducorps, they're my favourite 'too :)

Pear seeds are no good, but I'm pretty sure pears are OK without the seeds. Sometimes, I feed my parrots pears and nashi pears when the apples at the markets aren't of high quality.

i meant avacados . i was told not to feed it those so i just presumed pears as well .

Well, I just discussed this with my vet about a month ago because Merlin is not wanting to eat additional foods that are high in vitamin A (carrots, squash, sweet potatoes, mangoes). Yes, she probably gets enough of it from her pellets, but the cells in fresh foods are better at doing that. So yes, pellets are a complete food, but fresh foods do at least liven up their day and give them something more interesting to eat. I probably wouldn't want to eat nothing but brown pellets either.

My BCC was the same way about not eating anything orange. What I did with her was make foods I could hide baby food in. So I would mix in baby food carrots or sweet potatoes and give her that.

&agreeing with Roxyn, fruit and veggies make their day more interesting, so it's good even if just for mental stimulation alone :)

Merlin usually shares some breakfast/snacks with me, so apple/banana, some veggies if we've got that with our tea, pasta if that's in out food, etcetc.

Eating together is a bonding thing for birds too, so we try and get Merlin to 'share' our food (not grab, share!) so that he feels like part of our flock. :) So I think if you're eating a bit of fruit/veg, cut off a little bit for your fid, he'll appreciate you sharing your food with him! :)

i bought it from a good friend who had it from a baby. its 4 years old now.
it originally came from appleton exotics in scholes wigan.

since buying it ive searched quite a lot of pet shops and non seem to be able to get the ducorps. even appleton exotics now struggle to get them i think. but give them a ring im sure they will know sum1 who breeds them.

Ducorps breeders are very hard to come by in the UK, I've noticed anyway. Pretty much every other is readily available... tempted to start breeding my own, if I could ever find any! >: (

I rescued a ducorps and he was just wonderful, stole my heart. If I were to get a 'too, it'd definitely be a ducorps :)

hes a pleasure to have with us . i almost didnt buy him, he was for sale for about 3 weeks and many other people and shops were asked to buy him . anyway 3 weeks later i decided to have him. so glad i did now wish i had bought him straight away 3 weeks ago but least i have him now.

he wasnt cheap either  but worth every pound i paid.

everybody thats been to see him since i bought it adore him he sits on anybodys shoulder and doesnt want to get off.

I was origionally looking for a Ducorps , but I ended up falling head over heals for my Goffin Cockatoo. They look very similar , both are adorable :)
