Which Perch's Are Best ?

hi all. my ducorps is settling in very good. he loves the attention hes getting in his new home .

at the moment he has wooden perches . the normal ones that go across the inside of the cage.

my question is . is there any good or bad perch's that can be used or does it not matter. you see all kids of different ones.

java wood perch's
cement perches
etc etc

I have a variety of different perches in the Cage... For the main perch I have a Sandy perch which keeps her claws from getting long... I also have a wooden one, A rope one and a concrete one.. Each one is a different size! I have found though that she prefers the Sandy ones

Mickey has 7 perches in addition to the main wood one. His are either wood or pumice/cement....we tried rope, he wasn't happy with them, but that's just him. I am going to get a Boing perch and see if he likes that.

Different types of perches and different sizes are good. They need natural perches so that their feet get a good amount of exercise.

I agree the natural perches are best. Learn what the safe trees/wood is and you can collect newly fallen branches or cut them yourself. Springtime is a good time to do this. Then you can clean them by soaking in the bathtub with bleach water or GSE water with vinegar. Also you can bake them if they fit in the oven at a low temp. for about 30 min. leaving them in the oven afterwords until cooled down. If you can find a construction site where trees are being cut down all the better. I attach the perches with zip ties.

I use a variety of natural wood perches, with some difference in diameter, plus a rope perch and a concrete perch. Some are smooth and some have a bit rougher bark. My birds do move around and use different perches during the day. It provides exercise for their feet and helps prevent arthritis. The one that likes being at the bottom of her cage also has some wood blocks to stand on as well as perches.

I love the flat wood block perchs, not something I've seen available, but I bet easy enough to make

Maybe I too should add a flat wood block up higher in Merlin's cage. She's napping on hers right now.

Hi. The above comments are all valid. Every larger dird cage we have has a flat perch twice as wide as the bird and as long as the cage width. They are simple to make and some parrots such as our female Alexandrian spend 80 % of their time on it. ( She is destructive and forced to live in a cage. ) D.D.

I'm sure sometimes they must just get tired of perching. It probably feels good to stand with their feet flat, but not on a grate. i will add them to all my cages; can't hurt anything and pine is cheap to replace. When my amazon is out his favorite place to sit is on my thigh rather than my hand or arm.

thanks for the info everybody. i have currently 2 natural wooden branch perch's, 1 pumice perch, and a cement perch on a swing.

also have a wooden perch one that goes from one side of cage to the other.

Since I am not a wood crafter I got my platforms here: Squatters Platform Perch - LARGE [SQ5] : Rosie's Avian Outfitters, Select bird cages, bird food, parrot supplies, toys and more! The large size is better for even small birds.

So glad I looked in here!! I have never thought of a flat "perch" before. Wasn't something I even considered. I usually do at least one sand perch (Loki sleeps on his), varying sized rope perches, varying sized natural wood and sometimes a cement perch.
