I've been researching the Rose Breasted cockatoo, just for fun. Maybe some day in the future I may consider getting one (I like to plan WAY ahead of time). I did three years of research before getting Furbie, lol. Everything I've read online has said that they don't scream as often as the Umbrella, Mullocan, or Goffins cockatoos. Is this true?

Also, do they create as much dust as the white cockatoos? I assume because they are pink and not white that they make less dust, but I'm probably wrong.

So Galah owners...please tell me your experiences, the good, the bad, and the ugly :)

A Galah can scream just as loud as any other Too. But they can be trained screaming is unacceptable.

Yes you are wrong, they can shed a fair amount of feather dust. But lots of showers can help.

From my experience , my Galah , Rosie is just as dusty as my Goffin Yoshi. She also doesnt scream at all. But that may just be her way :) When she does get vocal , she still isnt as loud as my Yoshi. Rosie has a "lighter" voice , maybe that's what makes her less noticable ? She "chirps" and this can be loud , but it's not a scream by any means. Lots of baths do help keep the dander down , but they are just as "dusty" as other Toos :)

Good luck :)

They're just as dusty, can be loud, but they're much easier to handle than the bigger cockatoos... I don't see much difference in handling my Galah to any other parrot...

Charlie - Galah
my uncle found a wild, injured galah in his backyard, and took care of it and put it in a cage on his back porch. (they arent really protected much in SA) and it wasnt a problem bird at all. as long as you didnt put your finger in the bars, coz he was still wild, the noise wasnt too bad considering the stress she had been through.
*although this is coming from someone who has the wild flocks fly over every evening round dusk anyway. lol

I had a Galah 'Saffie' but unfortunately lost him :( He was such a wonderful bird, Wasn't very noisy, just chirpy. I have fostered an RTB2 'Freddie' and he was a screamer Saffie never made a noise anywhere near as loud as Freddie. The only thing that puts me off buying another Galah is that Saffie was so good what if I don't get another as good. :) Galahs are so friendly too.

Chewbaca quickly earned her name. She CHEWS everything, starting with the most expensive. We don't cage our birds, but do clip them. I hanged the replacement tv remote from the ceiling with a long spring, after she chewed all the buttons off the first one. Her favorite chew on their day stand is one of my old belts.

Hers is not a loud scream at all, and when she keeps it up, Greybeard says, "Whut?" in my voice. They are pretty well bonded, and sleep wing to wing in an open cage in the spare bathroom. She screams when we take him out of the room. Sure wish he would teach her to talk.

If you gotta' have a Too, the Galah is a good choice. Many's the time wifey has wanted to send her back, though, due to chew.

Like most people have said, they are "loud" but not "as loud" as the bigger cockatoos. :) It's like, for example, greencheeks are loud, but not as loud as the bigger conures like suns, jendays and nandays, but greencheeks can still scream along with the best of them. I wouldn't call greencheeks "quiet birds", but I would call them "quiet conures"!

I LOVE Galahs, they are one of the greatest birds, in my opinion! They are sweet as button, cuddly, easy to train, have a great talking ability, ADORABLE, an easy size, beautiful and hilarious to have around. Their size and beaks are MUCH more manageable then the bigger cockatoos, and they also don't seem to have a lot of the emotional, hormonal and neediness issues the bigger guys have.

I think the main thing that deters people away from them is how loud they can be, they have a gritty "screech/scream" sound and can be noiser then some birds as they often scream when they're playing with toys or "just for fun". Being in Australia, I think a lot more people can tolerate it as we often have flocks of wild galahs, corellas and white/black cockatoos flying around and screaming.

(and who could resist the PINK!?)

Suffer enough hearing loss, and a Galah won't be loud. That must be the case with us, as Chewbaca squawks, but not real loud. She hasn't said a word yet, however. She's too busy chewing.
