Ok, I have read that birds can hit sexual maturity anywhere from 6 months to 16 years, depending on the species. Those of you with toos, around what ages have you experienced this happening?

At this point, most birds have a specific time frame that people have figured out. You could look up exactly when for each species. I'm guessing because they have size differences that they might have time frame differences for sexual maturity.

It really varies from bird to bord. I got both of mine at 10 years so I'm not sure when they started it...but they are both sexually mature...

The Cockatoo

There is a link that touches on cockatoos and sexual maturity!

It does not give you a specific age cause it varies, but my macaw changed at 10 years old.

Maybe there is someone who breeds U2's or other cockatoos who could comment about the age of their breeding pairs?

For toos I seem to be hearing anywhere from around age 6-12 years. Maui is 6 so I am just trying to make sure I am prepared! This is one reason I am trying to retrain him that sitting on shoulders is not allowed (previous owners allowed it). Thanks for the responses and the website!

I am curious about this too, but for a Pionus. There really isn't too much online in regards to this. Tate has started regurgitating for my boyfriend and has been a little more vocal and a bit more cage aggressive, but other than that he's still sweet. He's only about a year old now, so will these behaviors get worse? If anyone finds some good info will you share?

Thanks

Let me know how that works out. Sugar's former owners also allowed for shoulders. I occasionally allow it with Loki (GCC) depeding on what I'm doing and so I may just give in for Sugar as well. Neither is at maturity yet and both are pretty darn good up there, but I do worry it could create problems in the future :54:

Katherine, he is doing well with it so far. On occasion he will test me and run up to my shoulder. When he does that I dump him off onto the couch, and that usually stops him. He seems content with sitting in my lap or on my arm.

Mi Amigo, I discovered, was 9yrs. when he came to us. I thought he was younger but, no, his previous owner assured me, he was 9. From that time on he showed signs of being a mature male cockatoo.

His behavior, as a mature male cockatoo, comes and goes. Usually around the beginning of spring he becomes unbearable...trying to hump you at unexpected moments, and all, threatening other males, (human men), who come into their territory, becomes tedious,,,my husband cannot walk across the property without Amigo making sure he stays at least 30ft. from me. I'm thinking about getting him his own woman, someone to call his own.

I need to add, Amigo has never bitten me, I think because he has chosen me as his mate. He will land near me when outside or on to my shoulder. When he lands near I will pick him up and put him on my shoulder, (didn't use to do that), but feel safe, now. If he ever does bite me,,,I will understand, (I hope).
