Loki (GCC) Sugar (Goffins)
Sugar has been home a week tomorrow. While she's still extremely fearful of everything and adjusting, her personality is starting to shine through. She's a character alright!

Today I took her back to the store I got her from, because she was in desperate need of her nails and wings being done and they do them for free. Not to mention, that the owner would be there and she was supposed to have Sugar's paperwork (band number, DNA sexing info, etc) from her previous owners. So after I get the wings and nails taken care of, and as the owner is asking about how Sugar is adjusting, I ask about the paperwork.

She gave me this look of "Oh am I annoyed" and proceeded to tell me how the previous owner was supposed to bring it in and "forgot". She's contacted them twice since it was requested once we knew when exactly Sugar was coming home, only to have not gotten anything back. Grr... so annoying! I honestly don't care what her reasoning for rehoming Sugar is at this point. Nothing is going to change my commitment to this bird. I am not even asking for medical records, all I really care about is the band number and the DNA sexing!! My Vet would like this information (at minimum, the band number) and it's annoying not to have something that's pretty vital. My understanding is that I can't get her microchipped without a band number :(

The store owner did say that if we had to, we'd find a way to get a band number, but I'd really prefer her original band number. Is that weird? Am I just being ridiculous?

What do you mean band number? You shouldn't need paperwork for that, just read whatever is on her legband, that's her band number. If the band has been removed and is no longer with the bird then having the number is useless. Sorry if I misunderstood the situation.

Maybe just find out what vet the woman took Sugar to and they would have it on record.
Or have the woman call the vet she went to and tell them the bird was adopted and the paperwork can be handed over to you. They should have all the info you want on them.
Maybe the lay owner doesn't want to deal with the pet store owner ?
You never really know the full story sometimes , but I wouldn't want the store owner to tick off the previous owner because she will just tell her to you know what and you will be out the info you want. Just a thought....

She doesn't have a band on her, therefor, I don't have her band number. Apparently, it's quite common to not put bands on birds now (again, this was news to me as last time I knew, everyone banded a bird), but DNA sexing is still done by the band number, so if she's already been sexed, I can track it through her band number.

Maybe just find out what vet the woman took Sugar to and they would have it on record.

I'd love to find out what Vet, but if the woman isn't returning calls from the store Owner, who isn't allowed to give me the previous owners information to do it myself, that's not likely to happen. Without something to go on, I can't even contact the vet and request the records anyway, because I don't have the Clients name. I'm likely going to be out the info I want anyway, which could prove problematic in the future. Remember, some states have strict bands on certain breeds of birds and many Avian Vets are turning in the owners of birds that are suspected of being wild caught and not captive bred. Because Goffin's fall into the Appendix I category, which highly regulates their trade, if I can't prove that the bird wasn't wild caught, I could be in hot water, even if I wasn't the one who captured her or bought her knowingly from someone who did.

I'm probably overly worried, but they also had 5 weeks to get this paperwork together for us. IMO, the paperwork should have been handed over to the store Owners the same week I put the deposit down.

I would ask the store owner which vets in the area do Toos, then go see each vet's office in person. If the store owner knows, but can't tell you, body language or a wink will communicate it.

There's only 3 Avian Vets that I'm aware of in the area, but they may not have taken her to an Avian Vet and this is a large region with a large amount of vets overall. Not to mention they could live 2 hours (or a bit more) away from where I live and use the same store because there aren't many in the region. I don't think she does know who they took the bird to, because I made a similar comment and she said "I'm really not sure, I'll have to ask them". :-/

I'm sorry this happened Katherine :(.
I hope you can get to the bottom of this really soon.
Talk more with the store owner , try convincing her to give you some form of info on these people so you can do a little investigating and get what you need.
It would be the right thing to do on the store owners part. Se sold you the bird , she could be in hot water as well for selling you a wild caught bird .........work it in your favor , be nice but diplomatic. I know your po'd , but it's really your only hope as I see it , I could be wrong though....

Thanks. Worse come to worse, I can take the owner up on her offer to just "reband" Sugar. It doesn't give me hatch dates, or any way to track her back to her breeder or anything like that, but at least it would be something and I could go from there. The store owner is a really nice woman, I've spent a lot of time with them over the past month and a half, and I know it's not her fault. It's the previous owners. The store owner has been nothing but helpful and understanding, so I'm going to hold off as long as possible, but I want to get Sugar microchipped before we move in July.
