7yr. old Goffin cockatoo, she IS Sassy!!
The owner of this bird lives about 15min. drive from me. I found her, "Sassy", on Craigslist. The owner came by today to check out where her bird would be going and we passed the test!! I get to meet Sassy tomorrow and bring her home. I'm looking forward to having a bird that likes to hang out in the house and really hoping the bird likes us, we shall see.

Thanks cdog, I'm feeling kind of guilty about not getting a rescue bird...is re-homed close? I found this bird on craigslist, they live very close to me and the woman who owns the bird decided, after coming to our home and meeting me, not to charge a re-homing fee. I know that I would also make a good home for a rescue bird but the closest one is about 3 hours away. Some day, I may start a cockatoo sanctuary.

I consider my rehome(Sully and Bella) a rescue because they were in a 24×20×30 cage, one perch, with two plastic toys, a seed and orange only diet, and their cage looked like it wasn't cleaned in a year. It doesn't sound that bad compared to some other cases but they have an extremely nice life now.

Can't wait to see pictures! I consider it a rescue as well, you never know who the bird might have ended up with, or if it would end up eventually in a rescue facility.

I consider my Sugar (a Goffin's, welcome to the club! ;) ) a "rescue" of sorts. On consignment at a bird store? Not exactly the Hilton.

I can't wait to see pictures! Congrats on your new baby!

I will TRY and post some pics tomorrow. Without one of my kids around to walk me through the operation, I could be iffy. I'm praying Amigo likes her as well. Since she's been in one home for 7 yrs. and not ever been sick, do you think that quarantine is necessary?

Quarantine is always necessary, it is in case he new bird is sick or is carrying a disease. You have to get the new bird to a vet to make sure there is nothing wrong and you have to quarantine for at least 30 days.

Will the vet take a blood test? How does this work? I will definitely make an appt. for her next week so's the vet will know about her.

I'm now wondering about Amigo, being exposed all day long to the great outdoors, all kinds of birds and their droppings. I suppose he could transmit diseases to her! I refuse to think negatively, if I did...Amigo would not be free flying, I would not even think about bringing another bird in to the mix and I would have to give in to my fears. NO STINKIN' WAY!! Thanks cdog for the advice and I will take it but somehow, to me, it doesn't make sense, under the circumstances.

I'd be more concerned about Amigo passing something to the new girl instead of her passing something to him, mainly because of all he's exposed to daily.

If I remember correctly, yes, the vet will most likely draw some blood, since it's the best way to find out if they have a disease. Birds don't often/usually show symptoms until they're practically at death's door. I think they also like a sample of their droppings but I can't remember if I did for Loki or not, so don't quote me on that ;)

Good luck!

Amigo's last check-up, a few months ago, there was no blood test involved. Maybe, I need to have him tested for disease? I'm going to try not to over-think this, I'll talk to the vet about it next week and in the mean time,,,I'll quarantine the new girl.

First of all congrats on the new baby! I'm sure your quite aware that you should keep Amigo away from the Goffin even if they both have a clean bill of health. As much as Amigo is attached to you, he will go after her any chance he gets. I do NOT trust Java with other birds so they are never out together nor being out in the bird room without being observed. There was a close call one day when one of the birds flew on his cage and Java went to attack and I got to the escapee before Java can. So now days I take the birds away into another room so that won't happen again. It was a close call....

That's awesome you getting her :D And it's a good idea to do a blood test, it tells a lot about a birds healthy.

Also in my opinion, a rescue is only a bird who was neglected, abused, or mistreated in some way. Adoption is still awesome though :D

Well, Sassy is home with me now. When I went to pick her up, her owner had her in her lap and cuddled up in a blanket. She has the cutest personality and came right to me! I had no idea how stinkin' cute these birds are!

She is ragged and dirty looking and plucks a bit on her chest. I've got her settled into her cage and I think I'm going to have to buy a larger one, what do you all think, 19"x24"x36",is it big enough? She has not climbed down off the bars of her cage, yet. She did crawl down for a drink of water and a bite of fresh corn, then she heard Amigo go off outside. She is pretty upset right now. Amigo is staring at her through the window, wondering what's up?

Does anyone know how long is normal for her to hang on the bars of her cage? She's been there for about 2hrs. now. I know she will take time to adjust to her new surroundings and we are hoping to make it easy as possible.

I hope to post some pics, soon. Yay! She just perched!

I think a larger cage might be in order, but it depends on how often she's out of it too. Maybe a 32 x 26 x 60something. Or that general number :)

Can't wait to see pictures, it'll take her awhile to settle down. I remember when I brought the CAG's home they didn't move for hours.
