My new Bare Eyed is waiting!

I posted a couple times last year about loosing my Nanday after having him for a little over 25 years and trying to decide my next, and at 46, my last parrot. After a lot of research and thought I decided on a Bare Eyed. I am still concerned with all the horror stories I hear about Too's past maturity but have taken the plunge. My wife and I have no children and our pets are our kids. I have never rehomed any animal I have taken in so to give up on this little one is not an option. Just have to work threw the issues together. I visited a lot of stores and talked to Katy of Hornbeam Aviary several times before selecting a store in North Dallas area. Katy's new pair didn't hit it off as I would have loved to get one from her.
This store is owned and run by a second generation owner and they have done nothing but birds since the 70's, conures up are cage free on stands or trees and clean as a pin. Put my depot down during Winter and got call a few days ago that it was in!! Unfortunately I live 250in miles away and will not be able visit it till I pick up when weaned. Will be sexed in a few weeks. She sent me pic but said it was not real happy as the breeder lift it with the parents for several weeks and had started hand feeding before turning over to the store. She said it is on four feedings a day I believe and SHOULD wean in July or August so I still have a while.
Will be ordering the King Euro Style play top 405 soon. Any problem with this cage that any one knows? Only question is with the play top can I hang toys from the roof?
Little sucker looks more like a chicken than a Too at this stage! Course I didn't choose a BE for his looks but for personality.

Awe so cute! I originally wanted a bare-eyed but was talked down to a galah by my breeders based on my situation they felt a smaller too would be better but one day when I live out on a farm I will have one! Congratulations on your baby!

Re: My new Bare Eyed is waiting!

BE are pretty rare hear in the States. We seem to want fancy and not care what is underneath as it were. Bigger is better so to speak to which I do not necessary agree. My final two choices were BE or a Rosie. Our home is Sooooo active with the German Shepherd chasing the cat. The cat chasing the German Shepherd. Friends in and out. And I am extreme type A person. As a species BE tend to be more extroverts it seems and I also wanted a youngster to grow up in this enviroment. My Nanday LOVED a party!! Would fly from person to person screaming and shacking his tail the whole time. Sure miss my old boy.

Re: My new Bare Eyed is waiting!

Well here in Australia they are pretty common. But we call them corellas which i think is a much nicer name. If raised in that environment you should have a good chance they'll love it.

Re: My new Bare Eyed is waiting!

I LOVE bare eye's! They are such clowns! My breeder has one and my husband is in love with this bird. They sing together everytime he goes to the store with me. I keep hoping that some day I can add one to our family. I too am a bit afraid of the stories that I hear about too's but I still think one would fit into our family quite well. Good luck your little one is adorable!

Re: My new Bare Eyed is waiting!

I LOVE BARE EYES !!!!!
Well , welcome back . I'm sorry for your loss .
A lot of those stories are true , and are told to make you aware of
what could possibly or actually happen when owning a Too.
They are the most mis understood and given up bird in the world.
They are very complex and need a completely educated owner to know
how to care for them. They can be loud , or should I say , will be loud at times.
One word of advice , They need to learn how to entertain themselves when your not available , so make sure to give your baby time on his own in his cage or on his
play stand . You don't want a clingy Velcro bird , but a bird who is comfortable on
his own too. I'm so glad I did the right things with my boy

I am soooooo jealous !!!! lololol.

You will have such a great time with your new baby !
They are the most clownish little guys of the Toos , IMO.
He is ADORABLE !! OMG , I'm in love
Please post new pictures when you get them ?

Re: My new Bare Eyed is waiting!

In my personal opinion Toos need to be split into two different categories: large and small. The differences of the larger Toos and small Toos makes it unfair to lump them all in the same group.

The large category is where you do get most of your horror stories. The larger Toos are a lot more emotionally unstable and harder to keep happy in captivity. Large Too examples: BP2, M2, U2, MM2, C2s etc. They tend to be a lot more louder than the small category as well. The larger Toos typically are a lot more demanding and require an owner that doesn't cave to their every whim. They are also a lot more destructive than others (of their environment and of themselves).

The small category is usually a lot more well rounded and easier to handle. They seem to have more of easy going personality and are more independent than the larger ones. Small Too examples: G2, RB2, DC2, BE2, etc. These Toos seem to be able entertain themselves a lot easier than the larger ones.

These are general traits that I have noticed. Each individual can vary but in general this seems to be the differences as a whole. IMPO.
