Thoughts about used cages or play stands

So as I'm preparing to bring home our new baby....I have a lot on my to do list. I wanted to get another cage and extra perches/playstands and found a couple really affordable opportunities but they are second hand.....really nervous about diseases and such. What are your thoughts on used cages? I spend a lot of time at my parents beach house on the weekends, the dog has his own bed so the bird will also need living quarters...? Am I putting my birds health at risk by getting a used cage, any recommendations on how to sterilize properly...? Thanks

Scrub it with bleach and water, leave it out to dry in the sun. Voila :)

Secondhand cages are fine, just give them a good disinfect before you use it and everything should be a-ok :)

Just make sure it's not got any rust or damage that could be dangerous to your birds and you're all set :)

I have gotten all my cages second hand, I have not had a problem, but I also understand the risks. You can clean them with dilute bleach then repeatedly rinse with plain water. I have not bought any wood products to use second hand because they are much more difficult to clean properly. I also ask about the health of the bird that was in the cage before.

I found a barely used Bottlebrush play stand for really cheap...the person had to rehome the African Gray....she bought it from the bird store I frequent who sole her the bird and they totally are supporting her reselling it to me. Normally the stand is about 289.00. But I would be pick it up for 100.00.... Can I still disinfect it? Or is it one of those things that I shouldn't even attempt?

Sugar's current cage was second-hand. I got it from MollyGreenCheeks, (who went even bigger for his GCC!) originally intended as a bigger cage for Loki (who wanted absolutely NOTHING to do with it!) and it's surprisingly the perfect size for Sugar. I disinfected it with diluted bleach as everyone here has also suggested and rinsed it off with water.

I'm more leery about wooden products that are used. New, not so much. Used? eeeh. Not a favored idea.

My Macaw's 2 cages are second hand. There's one for sale near me.. its a double macaw cage... and I reallllly want it. But empty cages in my house tend to get animals put in them eventually. LoL

I know how you feel, I am picking up a cage from Mara today, but I am going to use Sparky's current cage for outdoor use and the new one inside, I hope. We shall see, with the new bird coming I should probably wait until the whole thing is settled, but it will be soooo much easier than taking a HUGE cage outside every time I want Sparky to get some rays. :D

I once saw this huge java tree-stand for sale, used. You could use it, just treat with bleach and water and make sure to rinse very very well. It's a little more iffy because its harder to clean wood.. but if I found something like that for sale agian used by someone else, I'd probably at least try it.

Ok one more question ...9/10 bar spacing isn't that too big of a spacing for a goffin?
