New rescue too seems VERY shy.

I have never had a cockatoo before, but have always wanted one. (I have owned other parrot species, however). Well yesterday, "Oscar" all but fell in my lap. He was in need of a home, so we took him in. He is very friendly, he doesn't want to bite anyone and seems to be potty trained. But he is SOOOOO shy. I have gotten a whispered "hi Oscar" and a quiet "pretty birdy" out of him, but other than that he just sits in his cage. (even with the door open, he stays inside.).

Is this normal for a too when adapting to a new home? (Oscar is 5 according to the girl who gave him to us).

He did thoroughly enjoy his shower this morning though! :white1:

It is normal for any bird in a new home with new people to be quiet in the cage for a while. Just keep on what you are doing and go about life as normal and Oscar will adapt to your home and you. Thanks for taking him.

That's what I figured- I was a lot more worried, until I saw how happy he was in the shower. I'm off now to build him his own shower perch- my conures perch is waaaay too small for him and with how he likes to stretch out in the shower, he's too big to just hold!

The toos are warry of new area and new people....there's a difference in the meaning between rescue and adopting....if you care to explain how you rescued the too.....or is he adopted...

Congrats on your new Too. I have two U2s and they are such a joy in my life. Both being rescued I agree that time will cure the shyness. They can be a handful but the most loving birds I have ever experienced.

He is rescued. He came from someone who had about 100 different animals (cats, birds, reptiles, etc. ). He didn't get any attention and wasn't ever in a clean cage. He is surprisingly friendly with adults. He doesn't like kids. But he is very timid. He is starting to talk and open up a little though.

My good friend has a U2 named Charlie. She rescued him from an animal hoarder also and told me he showed similar behavior. When she first brought him home he would sit in his cage in the corner not even letting her or her family near him. They went about their days with his cage door open and she would sit beside him and read to him, sing to him etc. It is now 7 years later and she is his happiness in life. He lets her do anything to him including filing his nails

and she takes him everywhere she goes!

This was not a short process. She said it was probably 2 or 3 years before he fully trusted her. around 8 months before he would let anyone pick him up.

Take things slow and have patience, I am sure he will come around with time and love <3
