Just when I thought he was the most awesome bird...he takes my youngest son down to the bone, the butthead! He is on my s--t list!!

If you read negative things regarding cockatoos, from me, just bare with me. My son will recover, so will I. But, Makes me want to get out my gun!!

No, kc, no stitches, puncture wounds. The weirdest thing is, he LIKES my son, Wyatt. I wasn't home when it happened but makes me upset that it even happened. Wyatt knows this bird well. Amigo was bonded to him, before me! Just when I thought I knew him, (Amigo), so well,,,this happens. Just goes to show...

I'm glad the injuries doesn't need stitches.... but 'ouch'...

Now... I would show Amigo the baking dish along with the vegies and the *gulp* gun... Maybe doing a trial run, using a chicken and let Amigo watch... lol... I'm so naughty...

:( I hope your son's hand heals ok. Maybe Amigo is just mad at him for being gone so long. Or maybe since he was gone so long Amigo is trying to asert his dominance over your son. Amigo could see it as your son rejoining to the flock and letting your son know that he has lost his higher position since he left. Either way, hope you guys can get it setteled soon.

Oh and I do feel for you. Its not easy living with a male U2. When I had Cotton, he was a lot like Amigo, it was difficult for everyone, except me. Try not to be too mad at him, he just being what he is, a young male U2. Its hard to overcome natural instinct and mold the behavior to something more acceptable. In allowing him to live as close to the wild as possible, your going to have a little more unpredictable behavior. More because you are allowing him to be what he is supposed to be. I still think what you are doing with him is amazing and still in his best interest.

How are things with Amigo today? I bet your sons finger hurts really bad today poor guy. With all my animals, as soon as I think they are friendly, they seem to prove me wrong to remind me that they are all unpredictable. A bird bite can hurt so bad but an attack from a monkey tantrum is REALLY bad. Keep your head up, not every day is a bad one. Amigo will forget this incidence much faster than your son will. Hope things get back to normal for your family soon.

Thanks for the words of encouragement! I had such a long day, yesterday, away from home babysitting my 9 month old nephew, (he is a busy boy!), for over twelve hours that I came home pretty burned out. After hearing about Amigo, I just had to vent!

I like your idea of the baking dish, Lene! Knowing Amigo, though, he would just think it was time for dinner!

Michelle, you are so right about male cockatoos and their instincts. To Amigo, my son Wyatt was just in the way! Wyatt was actually trying to bring the bird inside when this happened, (because Amigo was asking to come in). He was probably stalking Wyatt and the poor kid didn't realize!

Amigo is his normal self today, tearing it up outside and my son is still sleeping so, I'm not sure how his finger is feeling. Before this happened, yesterday, Wyatt had just gotten home from having an impacted wisdom tooth pulled then a bone graft in that space, I'm gonna take a guess that when he gets up, he'll be messed up!

I hope Wyatt is feeling better today. I know he's probably hurting, but if he remembers not to take it personally, Amigo's bite, he may hurt a bit less. As previously written above, Amigo like all our birds has wild instincts, built right in to the DNA, and it's usually about self-preservation, short-term or long-term. As much as we think we understand what a bird's mood is, or what they are going to do next --- they will prove us wrong from time to time when we aren't prepared. Humans might yell or verbally snap at each other, birds physically snap at us.

So Wyatt was caught up in all that, but it wasn't likely a personal attack, which I'm sure y'all know.

Best to you and Wyatt.

If it were personal, he would probably be missing a finger or two. I'm glad it wasn't very serious. I know for me, if one of my birds sends me or one of my loved ones to the hospital, they will be gone quick, fast and in a hurry personal or not. I don't mind the occassional nip or even bite. But if it's serious enough enough that they need medical attention, especially stitches, they would be on that fast train to Georgia.:)

Thats horrible Mare , Im so sorry :(
I hope your son feels better ! Wow , first the tooth pain now the bite , poor kid :(

Did you mention that he just had the tooth extraction and work done that day ?
Could it have been the dentists "smells" , like the novacain and all that stuff ?
Just wondering.....maybe Amigo was acting fine , then got a whiff of the dentist smells and just reacted as if your son was a stranger or he just wanted to get away quickly and just bit out of fear ?

I dont know , sometimes we jsut will never know what causes birds to act the way they do.

But we can try at best to figure out the moment and causes.
I really try to give the birds the benefit of the doubt just because we cant always read their emotions. Im not sticking up for Amigo , just talking birds in general.
I dread the day I get "bite" from Stella  at least I hope its me and nobody else !

Hope your son feels better and Im sending hugs to both of you :):):)
Baby sitting can be so draining , I know , done it countless times , lolol.

Yes Mike, I agree. Amigo has sent my oldest son to the hospital, three stitches. There have been times that I've entertained the thought of rehoming him but I don't think he's rehomeable. I couldn't stand the thought of him being put back into the life he had, before.

Before this happened to Wyatt, yesterday, things have been running smoothly around here where Amigo is concerned. These things can happen and it makes all of us, a little bit sharper!

Thanks luvmytooo, you could be right about the dentist smells and I was also thinking that the pain meds they gave him, made him less aware, he's always been good at reading Amigo.
