Umbrella Cockatoo
Hi All i wounder if you would please be able to give me advice on the following problem.

We have had our umbrella Cockatoo since march. His name is Coco and he has been through two cages and is on his third one.

He somehow manages to rip the round bars off.So after the 2nd cage we decided to get a bigger cage with thicker round bars.

He has managed to rip off those round bars aswell and in the process has been breaking his beak and it is a constant thing where everyday when i get back home from work, he has broken his cage even more.

im not sure anymore of what i can do to prevent this? why is he doing this to his cage? i do belive bordom has got some effect on this aswel but is taken out his cage every afternoon for 2 hours when i get home.

Im really worried about him and i most definitely dont want to get rid of him as he has made home and has accepted us in the house hold.Very loving bird but hates my father with a passion.

Hello and welcome to the forum:)

Do you have Kings Cages over there? I think these are the Cages most people have for Too's and Macaws... They are alot stronger!

Will have a look thank YOu. When buying the cage though they did recommend this one to us for the Bird.

Im unsure of what it is i can do to precent him from doing this and hurting himself. Im not worried about the Cage but rather his beak that is breaking?

I know Kings Cages are supposed to be the best, but they are pretty pricey as well:(

I wouldn't worry too much about him breaking his beak! Too's beaks are pretty powerful and strong!

Want to try some new things with Him and add new toys to see if I can stop the boredom during the day

Try him with any Fruit and Veg, apart from Avacado. You will soon get to know which ones are his favourites:)

I know Too's love to destroy things, so plenty of Wooden Toys and shredable things! Another Good one is a large tray with lots of shredded paper in it, then hide some treats and toys in with it.. this keeps them amused for hours:)

Another good one is a Telephone Directory.

Will Give it a Try Tonight or very sooon that's for sure..when we got the 2 they said he need lots of attention and I do underrstand that but am soo tired when I get home I don't always have time. If I were to take him out for 2 or so hours a day and play with Him would that be enough so that he won't totally lose his mind ?

As Wenz mentioned---does he have a lot of wooden toys to destroy? If he has a selection of things to chew on, perhaps he will leave the cage bars alone.

He does have a Few but is prob room for some more without it being too over crowded. Will as sooon as I get home place in a Phone book and some more toys that I have baught him..having a selection actually makes more sense..he's very destructive tho with he's toys but I guess that's also quite normal for them to do . Thanks for the Help has def made me think of things I never have..any more help is always welcome :)

I would suggest buying some heavy duty difficult foraging toys filled with pellets and treats. Here is a video with some good examples and information:

They also make pinata toys that you could fill and he can destroy. You will be spending tons of money on new toys and having a large variety that you rotate is the best. Wood chunks for him to chew on throughout the day might be nice. Maybe something like this:
Manzanita Burlworks - Bird Perches - Custom Play Gyms - Natural Red
I have heard of people using 2 by 4s of bird safe, untreated wood for them to chew on. They even sell brackets to mount large hunks of wood like that in the cage.

Hi. A little more info will also help:

What is your Too's name?
Age?

What size is his current cage, length, width and height (all inside dimensions)?

Where is his cage?

What is his environment like all day when you are not home? (how much light, natural light, light bulbs, sounds like music or tv, or people talking and moving around)

If you can, please post a photo of his cage while he is inside or on top of it.

Also, am wondering what his history is (where did he live prior to your house, and under what circumstances, how did you acquire him).

Lastly, I would visit the pet store that sold you this cage and discuss with them that they said this is the correct cage for him and that it clearly is not. Since it is only one month old, ask them to take it back since it didn't hold up and didn't meet the requirements for this birdy, and they can give you the funds as a credit toward a more appropriate cage.

I can totally understand being too tired to handle the birdy when you get home, but 2 hours or less out of the cage each and every day sounds like too little, especially if you are unable to interact with him because you are too tired or doing other things.

Perhaps you can find other time, like the mornings before you leave house, to bring him in room where you get ready in morning and then where you eat breakfast. Let him sit and eat with you or talk with you.

Leave on a radio or tv for him, but not very loud, and leave on mellow or talk or nature station to start. This birdy sounds bored and frustrated.

We want to help you and your Too.

I second the request for a photo of his cage, and if you have them, previous cages as well.

What is/were the bar spacing on the cages? Have you tried smaller bar spacing so that he can't get his beak between the cage bars?

It's often recommended to not overcrowd the cage with toys, but maybe that's just what you need to do? Although, rather than hanging the toys throughout the cage, hang them all against or on the sides! This way, the toys will be in his way?

From little to big - currently 6 Linnies; 2 Budgies; 1 BHP; 2 CAGs; 2 Zons; 1 GWM. Formerly in the flock: 1 LSC2 [fostered/rehomed] RIP: 1 budgie 1 WCP & 1 sweet Pan Am
For what it is worth -

Our recently-rehomed-to-us cockatoo is like a termite, methodically making toothpicks & shavings out of any piece of wood he can get his beak on.

So I give him a LOT of wood. Including untreated pine 2 x 4's cut into 4" to 12" blocks. And because 'toos spend a lot of time on the ground, he has a big telephone book on the floor of his cage. Or he did. I need to replace THAT, too.

He has a stainless steel pail (which used to be my borzoi's water bowl) attached to his cage with random pieces of wood & bird-safe leather & plastic pieces in it. He throws some on the ground or into the neighboring plants & destroys the rest. I replace them every day & they entertain him.

Cockatoos destroy EVERYTHING. The trick may be to find the stuff your bird loves to chew & making sure he has plenty (so he lets the cage alone).

Where I live, we have an email 'freecycle' list where people list things they no longer want, to see if anyone else could use them. When anyone freecycles baskets, I offer to take them. The ones that are 'raw' willow or wicker or whatever (not painted, not shellacked) go to the birds, who delight in playing with them & destroying them.

Good luck!
