Umbrella Cockatoo
Hello,

My Umbrella Cockatoo, Lillie May, (10 months old) gets very anxious every evening. I haven't been able to do anything to get her calmed down except put her to bed. I have only had her for about 5 weeks and this happens every evening. She starts to get anxious at about 6:00 PM. She is very calm and pleasant the rest of the time.

I would appreciate any advice.

Thanks!

Well in order to help more you need to describe anxious. Is it screaming or what is she doing that you find it to be anxious and needs to be fixed? If she is just jumping up and down and throwing her crest around she may just be having fun and being a bird, but give me more exact information and I will help you out:).

She is running back and forth in her cage; running into the sides of the cage, and is very restless. When she is out of the cage, she will not stay on her tree or perch - she continues to fly down and try to get into her cage. This only happens in the evening and she is obviously distressed. She does not scream or make any noise -- she is very quiet for a cockatoo.

My m2 jackpot is always running around his cage and playing and throwing toys and running from perch to perch. They are high energy birds, honestly the most high energy bird you can own I'd be wiling to say. As for the playgym issue this is common with cockatoos. They don't want to stay still for very long. I usually out mine on hanging playgyms and it seems to stop them from jumping or flying off as quickly as they usually would. They love figuring things out so once they figure out how to get off of one playgym they will keep doing it again and again. Maybe she is telling you that at this time of night she wants food and to goo sleep. Where you her first owner because if not maybe someone else out her to bed around that time?

Try offering more toys and so on if she likes chewing up stuff give her chew toys if she likes forgaging fill up foraging toys for her. I'd she truly is being restless try to convert that play would be my most likely fix:)

My U2 is the same..in the evenings he is full of energy but its short lived because he goes to bed around 8 or 830. I let sydney out for about 4-5 hours a day. The best way to keep them from going stir crazy is to let them burn off energy playing. Also you won't be able to keep him on a play stand or anything ..mine will climb down from his cage and walk over to me all the time lol
