Chewing on the wall...home depot

So the way my cage is set up there is a corner wall right near my Goffin's cage. He has taken to chewing on it.. ugg. So I want to buy a semi hard wood and create a corner from top to bottom.

I figured I would buy 1"x6" piece of wood that's 6 foot long for one side of the wall and a 1"x2" 6 foot long for the other side and overlap them so they protect the wall. Then he can chew on that.

My question is what kind of wood. I know to stay away from pressure treated, and I figure pine would be too soft and he'll dig right through that.

Oak.....and I would screw them to the wall (into studs)...pre-drill & countersink the screw holes for best appearance.....while you're at HD, go by the paint dept. & pick up a half pint can of water based urethane (probably semi-gloss finish) to seal.finish the oak.....

As long as your walls are older than 8 years, there shouldn't be any problem with birds chewing on sheetrock walls, but the gulf coast hurricanes shut down several drywall factories & vendors bought some toxic drywall from China to make up for US shortfalls.....

Moving the cage about 2-3 inches from the wall would keep a bored goffins beak away from the sheetrock.....

Oak is a great idea! I can't move the cage over any further because the room is so small. I was definately going to screw the wood right into the wall. A small screw hole will be much easier to patch than giant bird bites!

The ideas sound great but I wouldn't seal or finish the oak as this could be toxic... Even it was a water based finish.

A goffins' beak is strong enough to eventually pull off a board that is merely screwed to sheetrock rather than be screwed to studs.....and in small, you probably want to use at least #8x1-3/4 (1.75") inch screws.....using shorter screws may not give you enough screw bite into the studs.....

I have used plexiglas to keep my macaws from damaging my walls.. I just made the piece large enough that the birds could to reach the ends of the panels or the screws to pull them out..

Which ever way you go..make sure it's safe for you and the bird.. Large heavy panels can fall and crush the bird..

I would do the non chewable thing such as plexiglass as well. It is a bad habit for them to chew or try and sharpen their beaks on the wall. I would use a piece of aluminum you can get them at 90 degree angles for exactly the purpose of protecting corners from damage glue it to the wall and paint over it you will hardly notice its there.

I used oak boards screwed directly into the corner studs. Here's a picture. He chews on it all the time and has only made a small dent in the wood so it was a great idea!

Oak actually appears on many lists of woods poisonous to birds. BUT I know of several long-time bird-keepers who use oak as perches & ladders for their big chewers. Untreated pine is recommended (but a softer wood that a buzz saw-beak can get through easier.)

It is a challenge to keep my woodwork intact, too. I forgot my 'too could open his food doors when he is climbing the outside of his cage (so he chewed the side of a pine bookshelf because while it was spaced far enough away from the cage, it wasn't quite far enough from a clever 'too sitting on a food door he had swung out to maximum distance . . . )

The corner cover is a great solution.

Untreated pine...that makes me lol because his cage came with a pine perch. I had to replace it after five days because he chewed through it.

I wonder if cockatoos think the wall is one magnificent chew toy. Also I really love your cage and how it has a little play stand at the top, if i was a bird I would enjoy that a lot.
