For those who are interested, I've just posted a brief article on my blog which includes video and audio of a group of Glossy Black Cockatoos I encountered a few days ago in the Macleay River Valley, NSW, Australia.

The video has been compressed somewhat by uploading to vimeo but it was nice to get some footage of these beautiful birds feeding.

These birds are just gorgeousm aren't they? Fancy being lucky enough to find a wild flock at work! I remember watching some in the Widden Valley about twenty years ago. They seemed to behave rather like black Corellas: they chortle and cackle at each other constantly and can be very funny with their athletic antics. You only find them where the wild casuarinas grow, so they're common within a limited range (that is, along the banks of certain creeks and rivers). This is because their preferred food is the fruit (cones with multiple seed-containing locules) of the casuarina. The power it requires to break one of those is considerable and I'd encourage you to take a moment to check out the size of the bill in comparison to the rest of the bird. I'm not aware of Glossies being kept in captivity, but I have seen them in Taronga Park Zoo in Sydney. They're beautiful birds! :)
