I have one umbrella cockatoo. A female 3 years old named Mina.
I have a 1 year old U2. Female. She just got over being sick. We are not sure if it was from her Harrison's food, or the fact she kisses me A LOT. So I got new Harrison's and no more kissing for my sweet girl. She still will not eat for me and has ver small poops. The vet wants to put her back on Baytril for ANOTHER 21 days. I'm very worried this will kill her!! I have started hand feeding her again because I don't know what else to do. If I don't will she eventually eat? Can anyone please give some advice? Her symptoms are only not eating and small poops. She is very active and happy talking dancing singing. If I give her her favorite junk food or the baby food she gobbles it down like she is starving. HELP please

What about using a different antibiotic????

Have you tried moistening the pellets with some fruit juice? Are you feeding any fresh foods? Mashes? What about something like a mashed sweet potato?

What about sprouted seeds? Nuts?

Perhaps you need to look into another pellet brand....Have you contacted Harrison's about your issue??? What test did the vet do on your baby??? What does he think what caused the sickness???

I did contact Harrison's. they were unhelpful except to send me a replacement bag. I changed her food and got her Zupreem fruit and veggie favors. She did like them at first but is back to not eating. She gets fresh fruits and I have tried veggies( she hates them) no matter how they are given to her. I have tried baby food veggies like sweet potatoes... Nope. The vet did a gram stain and culture of her poop. She had gram positive, gram negative, yeast, and blood in her stool. Batril and nystatin were given. Now she didn't do any tests just wants her on Baytril for 21 days! I have started hand feeding. She gobbles that down. Now I have the problem of how to wean her again. I think she was force weaned way too soon at 3 months. What do you guys think? I'm thinking of only doing the antibiotic for 7 days. I don't know. I'm so worried so upset. She is so important to me.

I think hand feeding is the right move at this time. Try mixing some organic Baby foods in with the hand feeding formula so she gets the taste of others foods. Keep lots of different types of foods in front of her at all times.
As to the second round of antibiotics, see about getting a second opinion. To often I have seen vets not understand why a bird is sick and just put them on more antibiotics...

Thank you that sounds like a great idea with the food. Unfortunately where I live there are no avian vets. This one is it. Well I shouldn't say that there is another one but he has killed so many birds NOBODY around here goes to him.

Well, how to put this....if your gut feeling is against another round of meds. There is this web site to look at. The Kitchen Physician Herbal Remedies for Parrots
Any time you go against a vets recommendation there is a chance of doing the wrong thing. But if you feel its the right thing that may help.

I just feel like without her doing any tests this time at all 21 days of an antibiotic is pretty over the top. She has been tested for every disease in the book and found negative. That is why I think maybe give it to her but for 7 day. I thank you very much for that site and I will check it out.

Try to give some organic yogurt too to replenish the good bacteria as antibiotics kills the good ones as well. During this time period might be wise to go on all seeds diet and switch back to pellets later on when she's better. I had to do that in the past....

She does like yogurt so I will give that, thank you. I have even tried seed and she won't eat them.

Which country do you live in? Maybe there's a good avian vet that can give a second opinion if your first vet sends the test results over?

In general, not completing a full course of antibiotics does more harm than good (it's one of the reasons we have so many resistant bacterias, I've been told). On the other hand, you don't want to give them unnecessarily. Since there obviously IS something wrong, and if they can't determine what, my own guess would be that continuing with the antibiotics probably won't cause any harm (you can get probiotics and give her is you'd like), whereas IF they're needed, stopping them will definitely cause harm.

But, why don't you take her to the vet to be retested? And/or ask the vet to try a different antibiotics (I've hear a lot of negative stuff about Baytril, and there seems to be better ones out there)?

I wouldn't worry about weaning her again at this point - the most important thing is that she gets food, and I'm certain she will wean again. And if she as force weaned too young, she'll only benefit from being hand fed a while longer. (I'm of the view that most hand raised parrots should be hand fed once daily or more if needed, long after weaning, as from what I understand that's what the parents would do in the wild (obviously depending on species)) :)

(I can't really give proper advice though as I don't know that much about medications and stuff - meant to write that in my post)

Then keep her stable on formula! Also keep her warm, if you can keep her in a smaller room where you can run a humidifier and keep temp around 80 that would be helpful! You can also mix some food to feed too that's high in protein such as cooked egg yolk mixed with cottage cheese. Plus there's many other things you can cook for her right now to boost her up.

Ive told my story on here before .But I want to give you a heads up . My Macaw was sick last year [different symptoms] weight loss and very weak . I started in July ,saw 3 different vets . From then July [to September] and all she was on was a lot of Batyril . They all suggested as she didn't get better [to put her down] . I thought she had cancer [[If it was a infection all that Baytril should have cleared it up] I made on last stop at Cornell [a vet school] . They tested her from head to toe [she didn't have cancer ] They said BAYTRIL WILL NOT EVEN TOUCH MOST BIRD ILLNESSES. They put her on Doxycycline [Im not saying that's the right med for you] . But this cured my bird [just having the right medicine]. Shes wonderful and healthy today . Please start questioning them on it. Somethings not right . Good Luck
