Hello,

I went for a walk with the GF to a favourite place of hers. While there I noticed some Galahs in a tree. I thought there might be a nest, and there was. We took some Pics on her phone, I will upload them later and set up a link. They use a tree hollow about 6 meters off the ground. Not news for anyone I am sure, but to see a picture of real one in the wild may be nice for other owners to get some perspective.

Hello,

We have Galahs who live in the area, nothing out of the ordinary to us over here. There are many colourful interesting Birds in Australia. Now for some trivia........ A Galah is a slang term for someone who is not very bright. Many years ago Frank Sinatra came over and there was a 2 page newspaper add. Instead of reading Gala performance, it was printed Galah.

Now a Cockatoo flock has a lookout in the top of a tree, and it sounds the alarm if there is danger. ( Sulphur crested and Galahs are mainly ground feeders, and often feed together ) In the good old days, if there was an illegal game going on, there would be a " Cockatoo " to give warning if the Cops came around.

We also have a bird called the Cassowary. Smaller than an Emu, but very protective and they have killed people. There is a sort of boney protrusion on the head, and like a crash helmet they put their head down and charge through the scrub. The Malley Fowl is a bird that incubates eggs in a mound of vegetation. The Lyre bird is another great mimic, they live in damp gullies. We also have a small bird called a Flame Robin. It is DayGlo orange in colour. I can Link pictures to some of these if anyone is interested.

That's some good quality photos you've taken there, very nice!!!! I really need to get a good camera to take pictures with instead of relying on my phone all the time...lol

Yea I see what you mean now, the Canon one is more crisp and detail on the bird then the other ones. But still pretty good pictures! :)

Hello,

That Pic has been cropped a lot. Small birds like that wont let you close, and move very fast. I will try and get a Pic of Galahs and Sulpher crested Cockies. They often graze together on the grass in the center of the road. They are very common, the irony is they are a problem to farmers with crops, yet in other countries they are a sought after bird.

Speaking of Cassowary I watched a very interesting documentary where they dissected a individual who was hit by a car.

What they discovered was that the "bone horn" is actually very soft, and hollow. It has holes leading to the sinuses that they believe helps them to make their unique call. The documentry was called "Insides Natures Giants The Dinosaur Bird"

Hello,

I dont think I have seen one in the wild, many of the other interesting birds I have though. Did you know that the Emu and Kangaroo cant walk backwards ? That is why they are on the coat of arms. Emu feathers have been exported for anti-static brush's. They are not much of a threat, but if used to people and food can become very demanding. I havn't seen anyone here who has a Gang Gang. They can really chew things. About the size of a Galah and Black with a Red head. The Sulhper Crested often chew through phone lines, mine was out for close to a month.

I've never seen a gang gang as a pet.... have heard they can be difficult birds to take care of, but definitely very unique individuals! People who have them typically have them as breeding birds.... although I did see photos of Barbara Heidenreich (a famous animal trainer) training a young female and an older male when she was in Australia!

Great pictures! :) Can't wait to see more!
