Recycled Galah

Hm. Had a scare yesterday. I let Dommie out of his cage as usual and then proceeded to get my breakfast. I left Dom in the kitchen, rummaging about on the cage tops and came out to the 'puter room to eat and read. Silence: perfect! Having finished my nutritious, health-giving muesli, I returned to the kitchen to make a cuppa. I glanced about to check on Dom, but there was no sign of him! Where was he? I hadn't done a cat-scan before letting him out because I'd seen the cats outside when I first got up. Oh no! Don't tell me Seamus was having a poultry breakfast!

Then, a rustling, rummaging sound came from the recycling bin beside Dom's cage. I opened the lid and *there* was Dommie, rummaging around in the junk mail and plastic bottles. He'd already shredded a few envelopes and was popping a bit of bubble wrap when I spied him. Not trusting him to leave my flesh alone, I stuck his perch down into the bin and he obligingly climbed up and out. I set him back on the cage tops and went to get my coffee.

Ten minutes later and Matt called me: 'Mum! Dominic's in the recycling bin! I think he had a fall!' We checked and tried to get Dommie out to no avail. The old vulture kept biting and lunging at us! So, we left him to his own devices with the perch left propped in the bin for him to climb out. He stayed in there all morning, cheerfully ripping and shredding and popping. He only came out when I let the Beaks out to play - then he put himself to bed and had a restorative snooze after the morning's activities.

I wouldn't mind this behaviour, only I've provided the birds with a hanging basket filled with rummaging material on their playgym. The Beaks like to sink themselves into the shredded paper and dig for chewy toys I've hidden in there (bottle tops, bits of wood, pasta noodles etc). Dom has eschewed (no pun intended) the basket for the rubbish bin. Oh well. Y'can't win.

Hmmm, forty lashes with a wet noodle Trish.....leaving our feathered friends to their own devices is not a good idea.....even in places/homes we believe to be bird proof, but then, you know your home better than we do.....

He He ,I would have let him go to it too !! I thought my Caiques would be the only strong minded ones.

I can't really leave chili unsupervised-things get destroyed very quickly. Lol.

Hahaha that is so cute! I can imagine hearing popping and chewing in the bin and hearing him squeaking with joy! So cute!

Dom usually has the run of the kitchen. Although he can fly, he rarely does and certainly doesn't go any higher than the top of his cage. I was just mystified as to why he would voluntarily jump into the darkness of the recyling bin, not once, but three times! Now I know he likes bubble wrap, I'll save it for him. (Gonna be hard - daughter likes it too). It is truly amazing how seldom one has a camera handy when these things happen, isn't it?

Oh my gosh I laughed when I read this. Just the mental picture of you trying to get him out and him like "no way chomp pop pop crack chomp" haha. It was a much needed chuckle for me. I would have done the same thing. Stuck a ladder in and let them get out when ready. Love it!

Try talking out a CAG from a rabbit igloo ( like a plastic house) ....she wasn't going for it at all! that was her nest box!! poor bunnies ....she tried to bite them when they got close wondering what the heck she was doing!!!
