It's with great sadness that I had to send my cockatoo to the rescue I got bit in face really close to the eye and I'm just not the right person for him and I can't take bites like this....I feel like im part of the problem with birds in rescues and I volunteer for a rescue myself....I just hope he finds a great new home that works for him..

47 views and no responses. I just had to say I am so sorry and I understand your loss. I had 2 dogs and added a third many years ago. The third one I had for 3 years but he made the other 2 (especially one of them) so miserable. I tried working with a dog trainer but it didn't work. He really needed to be an only dog. With great sadness I surrendered him to an organization that the trainer worked with. It was heartbreaking but I knew it was the right thing to do. He got a new family right away where he was the only dog. I even kept in touch with them for a few years after and they sent me mother's day gifts from him.

It really was so difficult. Besides feeling badly for him and like I had failed him, I was so ashamed. I never thought I would ever give up a pet. My pets are family. Sometimes things don't go as you planned. I am so sorry. I know it is a loss. :(

I'm so sorry :( it must have been hard to do that. It was good of you to think of the best place for your cockatoo, the rescue may have people better suited to deal with him. Did you ask them to keep you updated about his progress and eventual adoption? That would be pretty cool.

It sounds like you did what you had to do and even though it was hard it will get better and you put him in a place where he will be well taken care of:)

Many of us have had to let go of pets who did not belong with us. I took in a badly abused and neglected dog, but when I got engaged to a man in the Army, I knew that moving would kill her. I gave her to a new home, a home that assured me they understood her issues and wanted her. They called backa month later telling me to take her back. i knew if I did she would always be waiting for me to take her back again, and I could destroy her chances of adjusting to her new home - I had them take her to the humane society. Hardest, most painful decision of my life, and I was wracked with guilt even though I KNEW it was necessary. I am sorry you had to go through the hardship of letting a pet go. I am glad you found a rescue with room for him.

I am sorry that you had to go through that but if you and the bird were not a fit then you did the right thing on making a decision to try to find him a place that he would fit in better. I know toos are not for me.

'Toos are definitely not for everyone. Even if you have lived happily with other parrots, a 'Too often comes as a surprise.

Our 'Too is always available to the right home, but I suspect she will be with me for a very, very long time because I think there are way more 'Toos needing a 'right home' than there are homes who are really equipped to live with these beautiful but often demanding & quirky birds.

We had everything from budgies to macaws before the SC2 arrived & none of it prepared me for an SC2's wants & needs. And the tone of an SC2 scream (or the fact that even a U2's scream didn't bother me nearly as much as the tone of the scream of the 'Too that I'd chosen to live with.)

Sometimes the hardest but best thing is to admit you are not the right fit & to give the parrot the ability to find a place that suits him or her better. And telling the difference between "I can adjust to this bird's needs" and "I need to admit this one is beyond my ability to cope & will be happier elsewhere" is very tough.
