I've actually seen those huge flocks of sulphur-cresteds at Lakeland, having driven through there several times. It's on the Peninsula Developmnent Road from Weipa to Cairns. Amazing!

When we were on our honeymoon, we were driving home down the Buckett's Way from Gloucester (high country). Rounding a bend in the late afternoon, we had to stop for the biggest flock of Galahs I've ever seen. They were thickly covering the road for about thirty metres in front of us and busily chomping what looked like spilled chicken feed. We were delighted and just sat to watch. When my husband slo-oo-owly got out of the car to take a picture, the flock rose as one, carking deafeningly and wheeled off to the west. They perched in a series of dead trees and just waited. We drove off and looked back to see them back on their patch of road, happily nommin' up their windfall. I reckon there'd have been three thousand birds in that little patch of road!

Why this is remarkable is that you don't generally get such large flocks so near the coast. They're a feature of the drier inland areas where the big grain farms are. This lot must've been a random aggregation of flocks that caught a great opportunity to feed. I have to say, the sight of that glorious pink and grey carpet was just stunning! :)

A few years ago, travelling on, from memory, the Oxley Highway (which runs from near Warren right through to Port Macquarie- I was turning off though to go to Armidale) the section near the Macquarie Marshes got some heavy thunderstorms, and the rainwater collected in those dips at the edge of the tar macadam, from all the truck traffic. Galahs would come down to drink, they'd jump into the air for a car, but fast-moving semis and road trains have peculiar airflow and sometimes a half-dozen or more galahs would be killed by one truck. Very sad:(

Note to N Americans and Europeans- some of Oz's "major highways" would be considered "B" or "C" roads, mostly single lane and mix fast car traffic with slow "grey nomads" with caravans and road trains and other trucks. Awful.

The first time I watched it, it was later at night so all the birds were sleeping but as soon as my budgies heard the flock they woke up all excited and called back to them.

I've watched it probably 10 times already lol
