Goffin Cockatoo
Hi, so I'm new to owning cockatoos and I'm in need of some help. My Goffin Cockatoo, Zephyr, is crying all the time. I must say it was cute when we first brought him home and it was just when he didn't get his food on time but now he's doing it all day if someone isn't petting him. Sometimes he will continue to whine even if you are holding him. I'm sorry to say it's slowly driving me nuts and I now have to put him in another room to sleep to keep him from keeping me up all night. What is causing this and what can I do for him?:white1:

White Face Cinnamon Pearl Pied Cockatiel - "Muffin"

Hatch Date: October 4th, 2013
RIP July 4, 2014
How old is he?

That sounds exactly like my cockatiel, but then I brought him to the vet. It turned out he had a wound that was festering that I didn't know about, and he aggravated it further which made it bleed. The vet repaired it, and now the whining, crying has now ceased, and he only tweets, whistles.

It may be that he's just wants attention, but you never know. Did he have a checkup yet?

He is 9 months old and I've had him for the last three months. I've been unable to being him for a check-up yet because there are no decent avian vets in my area.

These guys can be tough!! Im surprised the don't make a bigger deal about them on the internet [I see they lot them into a almost easy Too] My goffin is a rehome that came with issues . I know exactly that sound your living with. Mine I think his problem is hes a insecure bird [also if their bored] They will let you know. Mine I have on a consistent time out of cage schedule . My family hoots and hollars when hes out doing his tricks so he has his "star " moment. Even though he has a cage full of toys . I just discovered he LOVES cardboard boxes and newspaper to shred. Its a mess but worth it [hes working on them right now.} So keep trying with different toys [don't give up] When he starts screaming and wont settle down. I take him out again .I know they say to ignore him but its not all the time and reassuring him works for me. I take him out for 3 minutes and then hes useally fine. At night I have to cover him completely [no light ] for bed. He is definitely the " Black sheep " of my bunch [they all cant be good right? ;)}I think with these guys you need to keep trying things that might work [and think outside the box] Its gotten better for me.

My five year old re-homed U2 has been with me for three months now.
He was evicted from his first two homes for screaming. He only screams a little in the morning and again in the evening. I was told it was the honeymoon period, but so far that hasn't changed. I work at home but I have to be away for long hours several times a week. I leave the TV on cartoon channels for him. He has a toy guitar that plays music when he pushes the buttons, he plays and tries to sing with it. He loves shredding paper. I put a toy or treat inside a lunch bag and twist the top and put it through the bars of his cage. I put several new ones in his cage every morning and he climbs around opening them. When he doesn't want to calm down in the evening, I read to him or listen to music with him. He shares a room with two Quakers, they keep him company too. He would prefer to be held like a puppy constantly but he's learning to entertain himself. He whines and cries like a baby with one of my Quakers but not very often. I prefer crying to their suffering cat imitations which they also do pretty often. I love cockatoo voices. I'm actually thinking about getting another cockatoo.

Thank you for all the ideas! He's already improving today with the cardboard idea. I had wood toys for him but he doesn't seem to like them as much as the soft chews. I'll check for musical baby toys for him to play with. Once again, your ideas are much appreciated. Zephyr and I thank you.
