Hi all :)

I am new to the forum. I have a beloved Galah named Charlie who is 15 years old.

I took him to the Vet today and the Vet stated Charlie was a girl! The vet I took Charlie to years ago stated he/she is a boy due to the eye colour, size and aggressiveness (very loud and likes to destroy things like newspaper etc). She suggested a DNA test to be certain.

Is anybody able to suggest looking at the photos below?

Thanks all:)

James

It's hard to say, the brown color can sometimes be on females OR males. My galah is a female and has very similar iris color. Males can be identified by very dark brown nearly black eyes. Females can be identified by pink, light brown, or red eyes. The mid range brown eyes are tricky ;)

Having your vet carefully take a little blood to do a DNA sexing is only way to be 100% sure.

I agree with Ashley; going by eye color in galahs isn't really the best way to sex them....only having a DNA test will tell you the correct gender accurately.

When we took chili in for her first vet visit, the vet assistants kept calling her a "her", but when I asked the vet she said it was hard to tell and said "maybe a boy?"....it cost about $40 and took a few weeks, but we got a "gender certificate" in the mail stating chili was a girl!!

Chili is still a juvenile though- so her eye color could eventually change.

Thanks for your responses :)

I guess my main reason for doubting it is the difference in character compared to a couple of other female Galahs I have met. Charlie is very loud, destructive (as are most male Galahs) and less placid. But then again, I guess they all have different personalities.

I think I will get a DNA test from a reputable Vet.

Dominic: Galah(RIP: 1981-2018); The Lovies: Four Blue Masked Lovebirds; Barney and Madge (The Beaks): Alexandrines; Miss Rosetta Stone: Little Corella
My Dominic is almost certainly a girl (red eye colour), but the kids have called her 'him' for twenty years or more and the vet said, since s/he has never laid an egg (the bird, not the vet), there could be doubt. So we have all agreed that for family purposes Dom is a boy. S/he is aggressive and favours men enormously and likes to chew and destroy (chewed two pizza boxes today). From our point of view, it's the Galahness and not the gender that make our Dommie unique. :)
